Autojumble / Re: Sacrificial cylinder barrel wanted
« on: February 12, 2019, 10:57:46 AM »
Many thanks for that, you're probably right about postage. However, a quick look at hermes suggests £9 or so for 15 kg although they do say vehicle parts are prohibited (no idea why). Would be OK if described as scrap iron perhaps.....

Ironically I did have an A10 block myself some years ago which I took some fins from for an A10 I had at the time. Foolishly I then took it in for scrap. There's a moral there somewhere.

Autojumble / Sacrificial cylinder barrel wanted
« on: February 11, 2019, 10:58:11 AM »
There are a few broken fins on my ES2 which I'd like to tidy up in the fullness of time. I don't want to wreck an otherwise good barrel, neither do I want to pay much (anything?). So does anyone have a scrap cast iron barrel (not necessarily Norton) lying about, preferably in the West Midlands, that I could use as a donor? No rush as it will probably be next autumn before I'm ready for it.

Failing that I'll probably pop, over to Yeomans and see what they have.

British Bikes / Re: Rocket Three oil return

Usually the end of the return pipe is flattened leaving a slit for the returning oil. No idea what the corss section would be however.

Given the fuse issue the bike probably started on the alternator output (which is good news). I do wonder whether you have the battery correctly connected?

But as everyone has said, it's best to give it a through check over. It won't take more than an hour or so and you'll get more familiar with what's what.

Could be almost anything but for a start I'd be looking at blocked main jet. Failing that, seized auto advance. Then the world is your oyster.

Or Easy Start. If it fires on that then the problem isn't ignition.

That advance figure is probably for full retard. It's usually better to time on full advance as that's where the engine spends most of its time. But if that's the only figure you've got then that's what you'll have to use.

Capacitor is the modern name for condenser. They're cheap enough and always worth replacing.

British Bikes / Re: Is a Sunbeam S8 capable of cruising at 57mph?
« on: January 23, 2019, 11:56:22 AM »
For a while......

Although the fake Sunbeams are very popular with those with a hipster leaning they did have a number of design flaws including the worm drive back axle. If I was looking for a 500 twin I'd go for an A7 unless you really want shaft drive in which case a BMW might suit you. But your Matchless would probably be nearly as fast......

Spares are available for the S7 / S8 from Stewart Engineering.

Set on the 10 amp range, at least initially.

The most likely source of the problem would be the rectifier. Is it the original plate type?

Looking at the tax records, it's marked as "untaxed" and with no MoT record or insurance so it's probably a long time since it's been on the road. It was quite possibly transferred to the DVLA records in the 1980s when that became mandatory but my guess is it's either rotting away somewhere or has disappeared.

Interestingly it's listed as "black" not "white" which an Ivory Calthorpe would have originally been. And Calthorpe is spelt wrongly....

Might be worth contacting Villiers Services who have stacks of stuff. If they don't have one they may know someone who does.

I think it has the makings of a nice little runaround but will never be worth a fortune. Probably a good thing.....

They have the centre bearing crank which either reduces or increases vibration depending on who you believe.

AMC twins were never as popular as the big 3 but as Rex says owners like them.

The AMOC has quite a good forum: http://www.jampot.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=3&sid=32b3620efe8b5147e4ebe840ab080f18

Loads of workshop manuals etc at Christian's Archive: http://archives.jampot.dk/

Oh, and Steve Surbey at http://www.amcclassicspares.com/ is a goldmine for used parts and info.
