I wouldn't buy that bike...it's clearly got a Kawasaki side-stand.. ;)

And a red HT lead......

At least there are no gutter bolts involved. ;)

Yes, and even so it's quite loud!

It's starting to look much better:

Starting and running well thanks to fitting a 3.5 cutaway rather then the specified 4. Many thanks to Dave for supplying me with this. I suspect the original was for economy rather than performance.

Still a few jobs to get it on the road so I can assess what needs to be done over the winter apart from cosmetics. But so far I'm pleased with progress.

British Bikes / Re: Monobloc carb slides
« on: August 05, 2018, 10:20:00 AM »
Thanks John.

I'd only be taking .030" off which is much less than the difference between any 2 grooves in the needle.....

I was going to skim the slide in the lathe so taking it off the flat end face rather than the angled cutaway so would be reducing the amount of cutaway.

That link I pointed to says that the geometry would be changed as the cutaway normally starts from the same horizontal position at the bottom of the slide hence its angle changes with different cutaway values.

But we'll see how the slide from Dave works.

I did find a thread on the Vincent forum where people do seem to have a fairly relaxed attitude to this sort of thing:

My 1952 ES2 is fitted with an (incorrect) 1 1/16" Monobloc 376. It should be a 1 1/16" 276 type but I'm happy to stick with the later carb at least for the time being.

The "correct" settings for both the 276 and the 376 (which is correct for later machines) include a no 4 cutaway. I've found it runs much better with a 3.5 component although the only one I have in my fairly extensive collection of bits is well past its best.

It struck me that perhaps I could skim .030" or so off the bottom flat face of a good No. 4 slide which I have (I understand the numbers increment by 1/16" per whole number).

I appreciate this will probably ruin the slide but as they's knocking on £30 by the time VAT & postage is included I'm tempted......

Looks like an interesting project. Do you have any more technical details of the starter motor, gearing, sprag etc? You never know, my right knee may give out one of these days.....

What always amused me about Tritons was that people thought the Triumph engine was a better performer than the Norton. Contemporary road tests (both from the same magazine) actually show the 650SS as faster both on acceleration and top speed than the Bonnie. And the revered Road Rocket with its TT carb? Slower than both.

If you like it just buy it and don't worry about the gear ratios it's unlikely they are anything other than standard road.

Probably you are getting the sellers bullshite or plain ignorance.

There's a lot of it about.

Incidentally, no-one "potters about" at those speeds on a 50 year old bike. If that's what you want, honkawayama thing is what you need.

I used to get newby optimists in the AMC club wanting to "cruise" at 70mph on a '50s 350.............not for long old lad, not for long.
I don't find that answer a great lot of help, the reason I ask is just so iam not dumped with a bike that's  revving its tits of at 50 mph and nothing short of a new gear box will fix it,  that's all  ???

You've had a number of sensible and well informed responses. Your reply is rude and confrontational. It's clear you don't understand how the gearing on these bikes works as whether it is close ratio or not has no bearing on the revs in top gear.

Perhaps you would be better off asking the question somewhere else (although you won't get better answers).

ZZR 600 - but I expect others may work.

here you are:

I chopped the bit that holds the switch off.

Been a bit quiet here so thought I'd bring you up to date. My ES2 came without the prop stand which is a hefty affair that looks as though it was designed by Brunel. It's possible to buy repros but at the thick end of £150 a bit much for me.

I'd read that a Kawasaki ZZR item could be pressed into service so picked one up from ebay for £7. With an old alloy engine plate and some spacers and lengthened studs this is the result:

Seems to work very nicely. I do like saving money.......

Always try on before you buy as they are very variable in shape and sizing. What suits one head will be useless on another.

Yes, I have the Bacon book but I suspect that 3/8" figure is a misprint. Both Edgar Franks and WC Haycraft say 5/8".

The Bacon books are quite good but do need some careful interpretation on occasion.

We'll see how it goes (or doesn't). I'm sorting out a prop stand at the moment being disinclined to spend well over £100 on one of Mr Emery's specials, which would probably fit about as well as his other stuff.
