Good luck with the knee. I had a total knee replacement 6 years ago and it was a life-changing event (for the better).

I have just read through part of this fascinating saga......

Surely the key is in post 107 when you say it started and ran well on the Chinese carb. This to me proves that the carb is where your problem lies.....

Yes, caution is always worth while. I must admit I was thinking more of things like the camplate and plunger, bearings and selection mechanism rather than gears themselves. And of course mainshafts differed by application.

Impossible to diagnose at a distance but first of all take the rocker box off (if it's OHV). Does this make it easier? Rocker spindles etc tight.

No difference?

Insufficient endfloat on the crankshaft or tight bearings? Slacken the mainshaft sprocket nut a bit and try.

Still no difference?

The head & barrel will have to come off. I would suspect a tight piston or insufficient end clearance of piston rings. If it's still tight with the barrel off then main bearings etc. Do check thet the con rod is free to rotate within the limits set by rge crankcase opening.

VMCC library is free if you visit (I believe still the case even for non-members).

It's well worth a trip anyway.......

Yes, I only discovered that fairly recently. Although as you say Burman merely manufactured them and had no input into the design.

What is also maybe not well known is that the "AMC" box fitted to later Nortons and (oddly) AMC bikes has essentially the same internals as the lay-down and even the doll's head boxes - indeed, many parts from the earlier models still fit the latest ones.

Of course a gearbox designed for a 20-something bhp single was struggling with 50 or so from the 828 Commando especially when fitted with the larger gearbox sprocket.

I've always thought the Norton boxes of whatever era (except maybe the earlier ones with the external linkages) had the sweetest action of all the common makes.

My GP surgery won't let people leave mags now - "danger of infection". What tosh - you're far more at risk sitting next to those ill people in the waiting room.

They still seem to have room for leaflets advertising ambulance chasers however.

As for Douglas with its kilted Scotsman......

Well done, and I hope the recovery progresses at speed.

I'm currently trying to flog some "Motor Cycling" cheap on ebay. No interest.

I think they're really interesting, with road tests, TT & ISDT reports etc etc but it seems the yoof (and maybe even pensioners) of today can't be bothered.

I do often see people trying to sell such mags for a fiver each but they must be real optimists.

A ball bearing doesn't actually need much lubrication except for the cage.....

I always use sealed bearings for wheels and where possible for sleeve gear bearings on gearbox. Sometimes with the latter it's a good idea to either use one with a single seal (obviously fitted on the outboard end) or take the inner seal off.

Some people advocate taking a seal off and packing with grease but I prefer to believe that the manufacturers know what they're doing. As I understand it, excess grease can cause churning and blow a seal off.

I would go for making up another lever as what I can see of the bike is relatively unmolested and it would be a shame to hack about what is probably a rare original enhancement.

Yes, but for an outfit you really want car tyres.

I think the original original Mini was actually 10" wheels but slightly later ones were 12". I'm sure racing tyres would be available eg

Not cheap though!
