I have an Arrow and found that the front brake is not nearly as bad as I feared from various reports.

Some points to check:

1. Make sure that the steel top hat bush in the backplate for the spindle is not badly worn as this allows the plate to flop about. I made a new one for mine.

2. Check the routing of the front brake cable which should go across from the handlebar lever to the left hand hole in the dummy tank then cross in front of the steering head. When I bought my bike it went down the right hand side (which is where the clutch cable should be).

3. The handlebar lever should have 7/8" pivot to nipple distance. Many have the incorrect 1.1/16" levers (inclding Arrows at the NMM).

PTFE lined cables are always a good idea. I generally have brakes relined by Villiers Services http://villiersservices.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=146 but the existing linings on my Arrow were fine so didn't bother in this instance.

But don't expect it to be easy.......

Can't help but best of luck in your quest.

The 1939 ISDT was the one where the British teams had to make a fairly hair-raising trip back across the continent to avoid being caught up in the war. I believe a number of bikes were abandoned in France and others were loaded onto vans and brought back to the UK. Some managed to ride their bikes back.

I have a copy of the Rob Carrick ISDT book in which he says: "Of the CSMA team, Whitehouse lost 10 and Ridgway retired, leaving Fred Perks running on time" on the penultimate day - after which all British competitors were instructed to abandon and return to the UK.

Yes, but those are asking prices. I find the best guide is to look for completed listings on ebay - and bikes like this seem to be £3 - £4K.

As said, any automotive condenser will do. It's pointless putting a meter on the plug lead while turning the engine over as this is likely only to fry the meter.

As far as I can see from the diagram, if you connect battery live to 15 and earth to the engine casing, you should have the basic ignition circuit. You can then at least get a spark. I'd disconnect everything else.

I wouldn't bother with anything else at this stage although the mere fact of the engine running will not tell you everything of course.

Very nice restoration.

Some years ago I did a complete bare metal restoration of an NSU Quickly for reasons that escape me now. I thoroughly agree with the comments re low power and increased rider weights as the Quickly, although it started and ran very well, barely had the power to take off from a standstill with me aboard. I have to confess to being well over the stated 10 stone......

TBH whatever the medium there will be some who post things I have no interest in whatever.

I just move swiftly on. It doesn't hurt me.

I must confess however to occasionally rising to the bait when a poster on that site extols the "virtues" of the "land of the free" with absolutely no relevance to motorcycles classic or not.
