ID Royal Enfield please
« on: October 25, 2008, 09:04:42 AM »
Please help me determine what this Royal Enfield is.
http://picasaweb.google.com/gunnerasch/enfield#

I swapped for this in 1971.....37 yrs ago, and left it in my Dads garage, moved away etc etc...I finally managed to get it shipped to me out here in California some 2100 miles away, last week.
The original title says its a 1961 Indian..and quite a mess that is, trying to Id a US Indian/Enfield.....

Its been partially stripped, tractor headlamp, fenders on backwards...all done in the 10 yrs before I got it..why....no idea.
Id like to either restore it...or turn it into a generic street bike...with an Enfield powerplant and frame...aftermarket headlamps etc...big question is how authentic I can afford...chuckle...
But first..I need to know what the old sod really is. Dad got it running about 15 yrs ago ..and it tossed him off onto a gravel road..and he put it back in the garage and let the scabs heal....ouch.

I suspect its a Meteor, or an Indian Apache..the skid plate under neither is something Ive never seen in all the RE photos Ive browsed in the last couple weeks..it appears to be original
Number on front of engine is AM 560, Number on side of left side of engine is PC 50263, number stamped into neck of frame is 9080 or 0806 :-[  Cast into the opposite side of the neck is 4759
Single Amal carb...probably a 700

Im a machinist...so would like to either restore the old girl (are English bikes male or female?...my '73 BMW R90/6...Trudy..is definately female....), or clean it up, put on aftermarket or used headlights etc etc and make a cleaned up rider with a RE powerplant.   The question becomes how Authentic can I afford to be...particularly in California....not a lot of Enfields here....

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This should make a fun winter project as the snow falls over the palm trees....

Thanks
