T140V cylinder base nuts

I am in the process of doing a top end rebuild and I have read that I should tighten the cylinder base nuts to the correct torque setting. As they are completely inaccessible to a normal torque wrench I am trying to find out exactly how this can be done. I have e-mailed a well known Triumph parts supplier who says his mechanic just does it by feel, but I do not feel confident enough to do it that way. Is there some kind of special tool? What do you guys think?

I also do it by feel.

You could always do it the "old" way, by using a spanner/wrench with a spring balance positioned along it at a known distance from the centre of the fastener (radius), and work out the amount of spring balance pulling force required for the particular radius?

If you own a torque wrench you can gauge how much pressure it takes to pull down the torque you require. I clamp a bolt in the vice, set the torque wrench to what ever setting is required, then holding the wrench at about the same distance from the bolt as the spanner you will be using, pull until it clicks. After a bit of practice you can get a "feel" for the ammount you need.

we use the multi point type nuts and grind a good quality ring spanner to go between the nut  and barrel then pull them up as tight as you can ,make sure that all the threads in the crankcase are good  and fit the studs as deep as they will go we do this and have no problem  with them loosening ,we run methanol with a 12.5/i compression ratio. we also use a head steady that fits between the rocker boxes and frame via a welded on lug as if we tip the nitromethane in (15%) at sprints it pulls the top off the cases level with the cam bushes ,cheers swe
