Albion g/box
« on: November 19, 2007, 03:16:45 AM »
Hi All ,I'm new to this site ,trying to get info on a g/box . Cant post pics ,so have them on my website ..www.rodschopshop.co.uk....click" previous projects" /then "mini wagons"
           Did any 'old' bikes have Albion g/boxes? The unit I have is 3 speed=1st /neutral/2nd/3rd.......It has a kick start attached ........ The sprocket sizes are 42 teeth /14 teeth ......... As far as I can tell the ratios are approx .......
 1st=2.75/1
 2nd=1.75/1
 3rd=1/1
  If this came from a bike,does anyone know what sprocket sizes would be on the rear wheel and engine ? I dont want to use it on a bike . but need to know approx sprocket sizes to power the machine I want it for . any help appreciated.
        Regards ROD

Hi Rod,
Albion made bike gearboxes for more years than you can imagine. They started just before the First World War and kept on going until the British bike industry finally died. They were also fitted to a zillion different types of commercial machinery.
They made 2,3 and 4 speed boxes for all capacities but mainly smaller boxes for lightweights. They were fitted to dozens of different makes.
What you describe is one of a couple of dozen possible variants all of which fit your general description but were made to cope with varying degrees of power and to suit various chainlines.
The engine sprocket sizes could vary from 12 to 24 or more and the rear from 38 upwards all depending on the engine capacity and what use the bike was intended for.
As you can see, your question is not easy to answer.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Cheers, Bob
