bsa 250 starfire
« on: January 31, 2013, 08:27:12 PM »
Can anyone help,I got a 1969 BSA starfire, would anyone know where I can find the chassis number on the bike.  Got log book with chassis number XC8873025 does this look like a proper chassis number for this bike?  I am new to restoring bikes so any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi,
See information:
My 441 Shooting Star, 1970 was in the position as cited, the frame and engine numbers were identical too

http://www.bsaownersclub.co.uk/Engine_Frame.html
1965-1968
Usually on the front engine mounting lug.

1968 onwards
Front engine mounting lug but the engine and frame numbers are the same.

Cheers

Hi,
Additionally  my engine stamping  code started with B44SS*******

I would have thought a Starfire code started B25SF*******or something like that...

Cheers

If you look more closely, your chassis number should read XC8873B25 not XC8873025.
This would be correct within the new numbering system introduced for the model year 1969 where XC means December 1968 and B25 is the model designation. In between is the serial number 8873 which runs on regardless of the model.
Location of the chassis number is as stated by John.

Cheers
Andy

Thanks for the advice, I have checked the front engine mounting lug there is no number stamped on it, If it was stamped should the number be B258863, Thanks Henry

Henry,
Is the paint stripped off?
You sure it hasn't been filled in or ground-off!

Could it be an after-market frame?

Cheers

Hi,
You sure its not a special frame, adapted for the road like
http://www.cheneyracing.co.uk/products.asp?productgroup=3
Look all over the frame and see if you can find any stampings on it elsewhere.

Or compare http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BSA-Starfire-Frame-/221152215868?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts

A few firms did build frames for BSA unit singles the above firm, is just one of them!

Cheers
