Suzuki gt550 Smoking Issue
« on: May 29, 2020, 02:03:12 AM »
Hi All,

I recently purchased a restored Suzuki GT550 1974, I dont know how far the engine was reconditioned, it all looks good but there is a problem as follows:

Under hard acceleration there is alot of smoke, when crusing at 80kmh there is no smoke, but if crusing at 100kmh under that bit more load there is constant smoke?

I have inspected the spark plugs and they are reasonable.
I have also reset the oil pump as per the manual ( it was initially set to high)
The bike has electronic ignition which I have also set correctly.

Has anyone come across this issue previously, or advice on what to check next?

Thanks

John

How far have you run this ?
Checked your transmission oil lately ?

If you google this problem, there are a LOT of similar cases.
Leaky seals from the transmission is one, 2 stroke oil settling
in the crankcases and taking a long time to burn out is another.
Not knowing the full history is none too helpful either...
Good luck.

I had an RD250 way back when, and it used to smoke badly if I gave it some wellie. The penny didn't drop until I found the transmission oil was all gone..

The exhaust pipes and mufflers may be full of oil too.

Probably are.
Takes a while for new owners to appreciate you have to ride the bike for quite a few miles for both the engine and the complete exhaust system to get up to operating temperature and blow out the excess oil. They load up surprisingly quickly in stop /start traffic or if only ridden commuter distances. Will then need a good ride to blow away the cobwebs and may lay down a Royal Navy quality smoke screen for a few miles while doing so.
The effect is magic. De-clagging the exhaust gives much the same result as a major engine tune up. You really notice the difference (and the engine stops smoking).

It can make sense that if the oil pump was set to feed too much oil, the engine and (more importantly) the mufler might be soaked with oil.
Perhaps you need to do a long ride so the muffler gets hotter in order to burn deposits.
Or you could try to clean somehow the the muffler.
I remember that on mine (gt125) they were soaked in sludge and was a bit smokey.
