Post by: rick on March 14, 2009, 10:15:01 AM
Hi All,

Just had the two halfs of my slopper engine polished when they come back I noticed a hair line crack on one of them its about 100mm long. I can get this welded hopfully in the inside of the case.
Any info has to what to look out for interms of welding technique, distortion etc. the cases are alloy and 1929 vintage

Thanks for looking

Rick

Hello Rick I had the same probleme with an ariel 1930 bottomhalf
There are specialist welders, they do it with TIG welding and heat up the case first and then after welding let it cool down for a long time by wrapping it in a asbestos banket to prevent cracking again.
This is the only good way to do it and it worked out well with my bottomhalve, there was almost no distortion and the crack stayed away.
good luck George

Thanks for the info George, I had an idea it may require heating up first, I guess it would be safer looking around for a specalist welding company
