Post by: daimon on April 26, 2009, 11:55:07 AM
Hi there,

Im new to this, my grand father has a old 1912 rover with a side car.
because of his health, he can't speak and tell me how to start it.
is there a manual for these?
the bike has been sitting for years and has been inside an covered.

i would asume that parts are like hens teeth..

what would i need to check before starting?

i don't want to reck it.

any help would be wonderfull.

im located in New Zealand

cheers
Daimon

I suggest you contact some classic motor cyclists near you in New Zealand, & I am sure they will be very helpful.
The British based Vintage Motor Cycle Club has many members all over the world, so they may be a good place to start. Here is their link http://www.vmcc.net/default.asp
You can probably find clubs near you by looking on the internet.

Hi Daimon,
If it has been sitting in the dry, and it was running before it was left there, there should be no problem in starting it. I'm happy to give instructions, but first we need to know what the drive arrangement is. Because it has a side-car, it will likely (but not necessarily) have a clutch and gears of some kind. Later Rovers can have a gearbox (chain from engine to gearbox, belt to the back wheel), but in 1912 it would more likely have a clutch and gearbox either (a) in the drive pulley on the engine shaft or (b) inside the back hub. If (a), it probably has a little tram handle control, or (b) will have a foot pedal clutch and a lever to select the gears (if there are any). If it's something else, you might have to post a picture. Let us know.
