Hi All,
I've been offered a late Bantam D14/4 and am thinking of using it for regular commuting back and to from work. I cover 28 miles a day, 5 days a week. Is a Bantam such as this a serious proposition for daily use today? Is there any improvements to the basic machine that should be carried out? What sort of £££ would an electronic ignition conversion cost and upgrade to 12 volt electrics cost? Would it be worth it? Any tips on improving the front brake?

If you accept the limitations of a machine of that age, such as cruising speed & older brakes. Then there is no reason why you shouldn't use it for reasonably reliable commuting, with the following obvious conditions.
Make sure the bike is in good order throughtout & properly maintained.
Electronic ignition is not a bad idea, & a 12 volts conversion would be sensible. 12 volts will allow you to to use a halogen headlight, & if you use LED lights for the other lights you will more watts available for the headlight.
You can maximise brake efficiency by making sure that all the parts are working & adjusted properly, & operating arms are at the correct operating angles. Check the drums for ovality & skim if needed, & use modern brake lining material.

I agree, and I did it for a while some years ago too.
Top thing to check is electrics and electrical connections, then use nylocs or Loctite to stop things vibrating off. Use a good battery and keep on top of maintenance.
Lastly, avoid Mr Goff like the plague. After sales and warranty returns policy is non-existent, so use Ebay for any stuff like that.

thanks for the info. I plan to convert the electrics to 12 volt and add Halogen lights, and replace the rectifier with a modern Japanese item, probably 2nd hand from the local breakers yard. I may leave the ignition as Standard for now and see how it goes.
Can anyone suggest an improvement to the front brake? I've thought about trying to fit a modern Jap hub / wheel fitted with a drum brake to see if it improves things. Has anyone done this already, and if so, what make and model would be appropriate and easiest to fit? Would a CG 125 etc work?
