Title: New rider.  What bike?

I have been riding a vintage Vespa anbd Lambretta for a good few years now and thought it was time I stepped up and bought a Motorcycle.  I really like the British bikes.  My problem is I know very little about them.  I quite like BSA but i also like Triumph and norton, in all honesty can anyone give me any advice as to the pitfalls of each?  I know its a long shot but would appreciate any advice.
