Title: Cylinder finish

I have an old side valve which has just been bored.What durable finish can I use on the cast iron barrel to stop it rusting?Powder coating has been suggested which should really get into the fins.Is it likely to burn off?Anything is better than rust coming through after a while.Thanks for any suggestions.

I just use high temp engine paint from Halfords. I prefer gloss finish but there is also matt finish as well.

 It will be ok sandblasted then powder coated, (nice finish) No problem but make sure powder coaters are reputable.

Hi S2,

Not exactly a Vintage Classic but good enough for a comparison  :D

My TS125 had the barrels powder coated but the exhaust was "Ceramic Coated", Supposed to be very durable.  Like old iron barrels 2-st trail bike exhausts seem to rust in the blink of an eye and you are forever re-spraying.  Hopefully this might last a bit longer.

Just for the record, I use 'Granville Cylinder Black' which is easy to apply with a fine brush and does a grand job of covering cleaned off rust that hasn't been sand/grit blasted.  My B33 project is an example.  The fins were pretty bad.
