Hi all.
I have had a couple of T140's over the years, and love them. I've now got another, which came mainly in 'kit form' and am slowly assembling the kit ! All is going well, though I am scratching my head with the rear wheel assembly. When I tighten the spindle, with everything apparently in place, it pinches the assembly and the wheel won't rotate freely. It appears there is something missing, though as I didn't dismantle it, it is hard to find what is missing. I believe it's something on the right side, something around the speedo drive unit, a washer/spacer maybe, just difficult to see what's missing in the manual pictures. Any thoughts/help would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Edward

If you're sure the bearings are fully home, try adding a suitable washer under the centre of the speedo drive on the wheel spindle and then see if the wheel spins freely.
I've had a few do this over the years, and a spacer seems to free up the working of the speedo drive from being clamped by the wheel spindle.

Some bikes have a top hat spacer that fits inside the speedo drive to stop it being crushed. But I don't know about T140s.

The early type with the Smiths speedo drive can bind on the wheel.
I'm assuming it's a spoked wheel.
Make sure you have the correct RH spacer.

Thanks for the replies chaps, much appreciated.
L.A.B. I will have a look at the spacer you mentioned, that sounds like what is missing ! Thank you.

I would suggest if that spacer was missing it would be noticeable when you tightened the spindle, as the speedo drive would start to deform before the nut became tight.

Hi again.
I had yet another head scratch while looking at it, as spacer (as mentioned by L.A.B.) is there, though there is nothing to stop the spedo drive from being pinched/bind against the wheel as there seems to be a spacer or something missing. In one of the photos, if you can see, there is a space between the wheel spacer and spedo drive and I wondered if there needed to be something there so they didn't touch when the spindle nut is tightened, and therefore binding on the wheel hub ? If so, I can't see anything in the manual to show this.
I have attached some photos to try and show what I mean.
Further thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Edward

Not only is the face of the speedo drive seriously distorted (it should be flat) but the 37-7021 washer (below) is also missing.

Thanks for that, very helpful.
What keeps the face away from the hub to stop it wearing, as it has done on mine ?
-
The fact that the speedo drive face should be flat.

One note about the 37-7021 washer is that it was not fitted to the very early rear disc model as I believe the raised section was originally part of the caliper bracket (which is missing from your picture) so what year T140 is it?
The chain adjuster also looks like the wrong type and the end plate is missing. If the LH chain adjuster has a spacer attached to it then it's the wrong type.

The hub and speedo drive both have marks which suggest that the speedo drive has spun at some point.
Do you have the missing parts to the speedo drive?
