Japanese Bikes / First Bike

Hi all!
First post to the forum, though I have been lurking for a little while...
Now, I've just passed my Direct Access, and am starting to look for my first big bike. Much as I love my Honda Monkey, it's a little small for long-distance cruises...
I have always loved the look of classic British bikes, Bonnies, Nortons, etc. But I'm not THAT good with a spanner, nor tdo I have that deep a wallet, both of which I understand you need for a classic Brit.
But so I'm looking towards the Japanese bikes. I really like the look of the Honda 400/4, and the Kawasaki z650 looks great too. As far as I can tell, I'm looking for something late 70's, or early 80's. I don't much like anything with too much plastic, fairings and such.
What do you lot recommend? I'm on a pretty tight budget, so will be looking to pick up something on the cheap side of 600 quid.
I likely won't be buying anything until September or October, once prices start falling a bit, so no point trying to sell me anything, just was after opinions/advice/warnings!
Thanks in advance!
