British Bikes / WHEEL BUILDING
« on: September 11, 2010, 03:36:47 PM »
Having read a Classic Bike article on wheel building I decided to have a go at it for myself. I have bought a pair of stainless rims and spoke sets from Central Wheel Components for my 1976 T140V (with front and rear discs) and by carefully and patiently following the instructions I was delighted to find that the front wheel was built and trued quite easily. I did however notice that whilst the inner measurement of the new rim matched that of the original, the outer measurement was 1.5mm greater (70.15mm compared to 68.52mm). I ignored this and adjusted the offset slightly.

However, I am now about to start building the rear wheel and although the inner rim measurement is fine, the distance between the outer edges of the rim is a whole 5mm greater on the new wheel. Given that the offset is supposed to be 5/16" from the disc face of the hub to the outer edge of the rim, how should I correctly adjust the offset to compensate for the fatter rim?

I will give it try. Thanks for the advice.

British Bikes / REMOVAL OF WHEEL SPINDLE NUT
« on: July 28, 2010, 08:47:57 PM »
I want to replace the front wheel bearings on my 1976 T140V but I am having difficulty in slackening off the wheel spindle nut (37-4133) on the left side as the spindle turns with it when pressure is applied, even with the spindle gripped firmly in a vice. Any ideas, anyone?

British Bikes / REAMER FOR T140 SWINGING ARM BUSHES
« on: May 31, 2010, 08:09:17 PM »
I am overhauling the swinging arm on my T140V and need to ream out the new bushes a little to accept new spindle sleeves. Does anyone know where I can get a reamer with a conical pilot to help me align it all properly?

British Bikes / T140 CRANKCASE TORQUE SETTINGS
« on: July 29, 2009, 01:44:18 PM »
The Triumph manual says tighten the crankcase junction bolts to 1.8 KGM and the studs to 2.8KGM. I am sure this must be correct but why are the two settings so different? It seems odd to tighten the fixings so unevenly.

British Bikes / REPLACEMENT T140V CRANKSHAFT
« on: April 27, 2009, 08:15:37 PM »
I have reached the conclusion that I would be better off replacing my worn crankshaft than attempting an expensive repair. Can anyone tell me if a 1979 T140E crankshaft is okay for my 1976 T140V? Judging by a photo alone, the only difference I can see is that the flywheel drillings are in different places but I assume these are just to balance the flywheel and therefore can differ from crankshaft to crankshaft.

British Bikes / T140V - WORN CRANKSHAFT
« on: April 21, 2009, 04:47:58 PM »
All my crankshaft journals have no wear at all but unfortunately due to a loose rotor key there is bad wear to the keyway and the bore of the rotor and corresponding crank face also have wear. My local engineering shop say they can reduce the diameter of the crank by a few thou but would then need to reduce the internal diameter of the rotor to match. He says he can make a new "core" for the rotor but does anyone know if the existing core can be pressed out in order to do this?

British Bikes / T140 - REMOVING CRANKSHAFT PINION
« on: April 12, 2009, 11:16:31 PM »
Before using the service tool to remove the crankshaft pinion it is necessary to remove the retaining nut, but the nut has a vee chiselled out of it (presumably at the factory) which prevents a socket from being used. How then, can I remove the nut?

You're right, the Haynes manual is missing a lot of the information I need. Thank you once again for your help - I will buy the Kim CD.

Thanks L.A.B. Where can I get my hands on a factory manual?

I am just about to split the crankcase on my 1976 T140V and have inadvertently disturbed the intermediate timing gear before marking the positions of the four timing gears. I have read that Clymer do a manual that describes how to set up the valve timing. Is that right or does anyone know of a better manual or website?
