British Bikes / mystery of wet sumping (bsa a10)
« on: August 12, 2012, 07:00:48 PM »
I have asked this question before but i have never received a straightforward answer, So, in simple terms, If you leave a BSA A10 in a garage for say 3 months without kicking it over and it wet sumps as they do,
When you kick it over for the first time does the oil in the sump return to the oil tank or does it stay in the sump ???

Hi, can anyone give me some info on the various types of boxes and what they stand for? I have a Super Rocket and i have removed the box today, i thought the stamp read ST3 but after getting onto the bench it actually reads STB, What is the difference between this and a STD ? also some info on RRT2 etc would be great, I'm learning something about these great machines every day!

British Bikes / Re: Fuel and Additive

I have started using castrol valvemaster plus,  lead and octane replacement for my super rocket at around £15 for 250 ml its twice the price of a decent bottle of whisky !! however it does convert 250 litres of fuel and is endorsed by the British Historic Vehicle Club. I obtained mine from Halfords although search ebay for a far better deal. Castrol also provide a technical advice line 01793 452 222

British Bikes / BSA Super Rocket Advance and Retard.
« on: November 01, 2009, 07:05:34 AM »
Hi good morning to everyone, I'm new to the forum and also new to the classic scene. Ive recently aquired a BSA Super  Rocket in lovely condition she starts easily, stops (sort of!!) and generally performs well. ive started to increase the runs out to around 30 or so miles and so far no problems at all, so, here come a few questions.
With regard to advance/retard to start the bike i pull the lever back toward me just about half of its stroke, full choke and a tickle on the carb and away she goes normally first time then i push the A/R all
the way forward and reduce the choke gradually until i dont need it at all. However i'm now being told that whilst riding at higher revs i should slightly move the lever back to assist the engine and to reduce the heat at which she runs, like wise should i alter it when climbing a decent size hill?
The exhausts are a nice straw colour which again i'm told is a good sign also, sorry if this offends anyone would it be worth fitting an electronic addition which hides in the toolbox to eliminate the A/R
as most ads claim it automatically sorts out the optimum firing position automatically.
The bike is fitted with a new magneto and runs well but obviously the last thing i want to do is to cause damage. I'm also adding castrol valvemaster as a lead and octane additive. One last thing, can you give me some advice on warm starting do you always retard and do you need to tickle at all?
Many thanks i welcome your comments. Dicky.

British Bikes / Whining 3rd Gear on a super rocket bsa.
« on: October 17, 2009, 12:14:59 AM »
Hi everyone, this is my first post so if im repeating previous posts then forgive! ive recently bought a super rocket in fab condition except for 3rd gear which whines really loud. i am a time served mechanical engineer so is it a diy possibility or is special tooling needed? i live in the Birmingham area so if anyone can point me the right way i would be grateful. Also, names and phone numbers of people who can rebuild a box would be great. thanks
