British Bikes / Re: 1927 BSA - Nickel or Chrome controls?

Thanks for that.  I had a feeling that they should be nickel, but it's nice to know for sure.

Thanks

British Bikes / 1927 BSA - Nickel or Chrome controls?
« on: March 11, 2013, 04:07:02 PM »
Hi.  I have a 1927 BSA S27 which currently has chromium plated controls.  My question is should they be nickel or chrome?  I'd also like to know when BSA switched over from nickel to chrome, if anyone knows?

Thanks

Hi.  Thanks for the replies.  I'll have a go in a couple of weeks once the bike comes off the road for the winter.
Thanks

British Bikes / BSA S27 1927 Inverted Levers
« on: August 03, 2011, 06:00:06 PM »
Hi.  I've got some new handlebar grips for my BSA S27.  This bike has the original inverted levers, with the front brake/valve lifter cables running through the centre of the handlebar.  The question is: how do I remove the inverted levers to get the old grips off, and the new ones on?  I can't see any fixings, other than the pivot bolt between the lever and the lever body.  Any ideas?
Thanks

British Bikes / Re: BSA S27 Handlebar Rubbers

Hi Rob.  My bike is a 500cc side valve.  The S denotes 500, and the 27 the model year, ie 1927.  The L in your case denotes 350.  Hence yours should be a 1929 350.  As far as the valve caps go, I have the opposite problem to you.  They kept coming loose.  However, I`ve now found out that there should be a copper crush washer under the cap, so that`s next on my shopping list.  As far as getting valve caps made, I`m sorry I can`t help.  But a good motorcycle machine shop should be able to make them.  I`m no expert on these bikes, so I`m sorry I can`t help with the carburettor.

Thanks for that.  It`s looking like the John Bull rubbers were the original, so I think I`ll go for those.  Having looked really closely at the ones on my bike, they are both slightly different, so almost certainly not original.

Hi.  I`m trying to find some replacement handlebar rubber grips for my 1927 BSA S27.  Anyone know what the bike would have had fitted originally?  I`ve been told that they had John Bull type barrel shape grips. But the very badly damaged ones that came with the bike have a nice piece moulded into the end, to stop your finger slipping into the hinge of the inverted lever.  I`d really like to find something like them, but haven`t seen anything like them.  Any ideas?  Thanks

British Bikes / AMAC Carburettor

Hi. I`ve got a 1927 BSA S27 with an AMAC carb.  There is a rotary knob on the offside of the carb body.  Can someone tell me what it`s for?  I can`t find any mention of it in the literature that I have.
Thanks

British Bikes / Re: Which engine oil for a 1927 sidevalve BSA?
« on: March 03, 2010, 09:18:48 AM »
Hi. Thanks for that.  My bike is a flat tank sidevalve with the "oil tank" in the petrol tank.  Total loss lubrication, so I reckon a low detergent SAE 40 will be fine.  Thanks

British Bikes / Which engine oil for a 1927 sidevalve BSA?
« on: March 02, 2010, 11:01:17 AM »
Hi.  Anyone out there who can tell me what engine oil to use in a 1927 BSA 500 sidevalve?
I`m guessing it will be a monograde ie SAE 30 or 40, but should it be high or low detergent?
BTW, whilst I`m at it, what about gearbox oil?  Any help appreciated.  The previous owner used Silkolene SAE 40 for the engine.

British Bikes / Re: MOT standard for 1927 BSA

Well, it passed with flying colours!  My local MOT man is really experienced with old bikes, so no problems. Now, I just need to get it taxed and insured, and I can start learning how to ride it!

Hi Revband.  Thanks for that.  I`d read that also, but was wondering if anyone had had practical experience with their bike.  I`ll find out tomorrow, as I`ve got the MOT booked.  This is my first vintage bike, and it`s a steep learning curve!

British Bikes / MOT standard for 1927 BSA
« on: February 16, 2010, 05:55:36 PM »
Hi. I`ve got a 1927 BSA nearly ready for it`s MOT.  It has a 6 volt battery powering front and rear side lights, and a main beam.  No dipped beam.  No dip switch.  Also, no brake light fitted.  Am I right in saying this meets the MOT standard for a pre 1931 bike?  Any help welcomed.

British Bikes / Re: BSA S27 chassis number
« on: February 13, 2010, 05:53:32 PM »
Hi.  I`ve now found the chassis number stamped on the downtube just under the seat on the nearside.  It was hidden by a battery box which had been clamped onto the down tube.
While checking the BSA owners club website, I discovered an error - they had listed the run of chassis / engine numbers which included mine as 4.98, instead of 4.93.  They`ve told me this will corrected shortly.  Thanks for your help.

Thanks.  I know what the number should be, it`s just locating it.  At least I have narrowed down the places to look - thanks.
