After several horror jobs coming through the workshop, and me rapidly losing the will to live I eventually got a corker.
1970 Yam LT3 trail bike. 1 lady owner from new, hardly had a spanner laid on it. No munted fasteners, no 1/2 arsed bodges by the last umpteen owners.
Just got it stripped for blasting and powder coating frame. No seized bits, no skinned knuckles.
As it was her 1st bike she as quite an attachment, and it' s in such good condition plan is to make a nice tidy rideable, everyday bike. Most of the stuff can be tidied up. Only bits that need replacing (at this stage) are -

front stanchions, stuck in wilds of New Zealand, rechroming isn't economical unless I can't get replacements.
wheel rims, these may clean up well enough for rechrome otherwise it'll be a toss up between powdercoating or replacing.
exhaust, silencer is solid but downpipe as rotted and split.
Rewire, wiring as just hardened with age.

There is a fair bit of stuff on e-bay but if anyone knows of other places for bits (especially forks) that would be great.

I' ve had same trouble with a Matchy I' ve just restored for a customer. He insisted he supply all the bits. Most of it through owners club. What a load of tat ! Everything from  nuts and bolts that don't screw together and inconsistant finish to cables the wrong length or wrong nipples. Twistgrip from Asia that was 2mm smaller at one end than the other !! The list goes on.
    I run a motorbike engineering business in New Zealand specialising in pre 90' s Japanese and specials building but also do Brit stuff ( I was brought up on Triumphs and BSA's). I' ve been looking at building repro stuff for a while simply because I can' t get stuff of a decent quality. Big problem is, being stuck out here I'm not sure what things are likely to sell.
    I' m just going to throw this out there and would welcome your comments,
If people could give me an idea of anything they have trouble with and would like better quality. Anything from small brackets to seat bases.
Would people be willing ( if I can' t source original parts here ) to supply me with an original part I can make A RELIABLE copy from and in return I' ll provide a new part for cost of postage.
Alternativly, if anyone as parts that are no longer good enough to use but that are ok as patterns, I'd be happy to buy them.
I' m happy to have a chat with anyone who thinks they can help or my e-mail is <mes@slingshot.co.nz>

Hi guys, just skimming through and saw this. I'm over in New Zealand running a bike restoration and specials building business.
I' ve just had similar issues with a Matchless i' ve just finished for a customer. He insisted on supplying the bits and I had trouble with virtually everything. Nuts and bolts that I had to mix and match, cables not fitting, even a twistgrip that was smaller at one end than the other and wouldn't fit. Everything was made in China / Asia and some of it was through owners club !!
I do agree that most bike riders are tight #rs#s, quiet happy to pay umpteen thousand for a new bike but want bits for bugger all. Don' t know what solution is ?
I' m looking at teaching myself sheetmetal work (I'm ex aircraft fitter) as it IS a dying art.

I' ve just aquired a Suzi fr80 step thru for knocking about on while I get the big road bike built and in the process of sourcing bits for it I was looking round for forums and couldn't really find anything although there are a few for modern and even chinese.
Does anyone know of any ?
I'm out in the wilds of New Zealand but if anyones interested I' d be happy to set something up to cater specifically for step thrus and maybe sports peds. Could also include classic english / italian scooters ?
Could start as an informal thing, just sharing restoration stories, helping each other out with bits, technical stuff etc.
Anyone interested ?

I' ve just joined forum and happened to come across this thread. By coincidence, it' s been on my mind for a while to look at building a 'replica' vintage bike and the girder forks were a sticking point.
I run a motorbike engineering business and am an ex aircraft engineer so the thought of building a set is the obvious answer. I'm just in process of researching as much as I can then, once I've got a few jobs out of the way I'll build a set. Seeing as I'm just getting started in classic / twin shock trials, I may build a rigid / girder bike to run in our social events.hat should test it  ;D
I' d be greatful for SERIOUS thoughts / feedback.
