British Bikes / BSA b31 Dynamo
« on: February 19, 2026, 05:47:49 PM »
I recently came to own a 1949 BSA B31 without a hint of a wiring harness.  The magneto throws a hot spark, so I'd like to see if it will start up.
Question is will I damage the dynamo by running it under no load?
Thanks.

British Bikes / Igniton points cam oiler?
« on: February 06, 2026, 09:03:28 PM »
I recently picked up a 1949 BSA B31 in pretty much complete condition.  I've been getting acquainted with it before I start any serious work.
I have a question concerning the magneto and how the ignition points cam is lubricated.  The points spin around while the plate cam stays fixed.  The mechanics manual gives directions for oiling a wick.
I can't find wick anywhere in the points compartment.  The manual shows a picture of a fixing screw for the oil felt, but nothing resembling a felt.
Can anyone tell me where to look and what it might look like? A picture would be fantastic.
Thanks.

British Bikes / Bonneville's Got a Crunch
« on: October 05, 2025, 09:41:37 PM »
I have a 1973 Triumph Bonneville T140V that is making a crunch like noise when the clutch lever is pulled in. It does it toward the end of the lever movement.
I've replaced the clutch lever, the clutch cable and all the clutch plates. I filed the slots in the clutch basket to remove rough spots and the plates seem to slide evenly.
I've now disassembled the clutch basket again, but I think I can still feel a rough spot when I push in on the end of the actuating rod.  Not much, but I'm thinking that maybe the noise is being amplified by the assembled clutch plates, springs, etc.
Looking for ides as what's left that might be causing this noise.
Many thanks.
Ron

British Bikes / Whatsit?

I bought a rolling basket case of an Ariel Arrow.
It's like putting a puzzle together without much in the way of directions.  The parts manual is helpful, but I can't seem to figure out what this piece might be.
Anyone recognize it?
Thanks.

British Bikes / Ariel Arrow?
« on: June 11, 2025, 02:23:23 PM »
I've pulled the wiring loom from my 1962 Ariel Arrow and am finding all sorts of interesting mysteries.  The current on is a "what's this".  Pictured below is what I'm thinking is some sort of rectifier.  I've never seen something like this, but it doesn't have anything else I would call a rectifier.
Anybody have any opinions?
Thanks.

British Bikes / Ariel Arrow Flasher?
« on: April 19, 2025, 08:23:50 PM »
I am starting the disassembly of a 1962 Ariel Arrow.  In removing the wiring harness, which is in very good condition, I discovered a flasher unit tucked up inside the frame.  The bike doesn't have flashers, nor any wiring intended for such.
Does anyone have a clue as to why this flasher is there?
Thanks.

British Bikes / What is this?

I have finished reassembly of my 1949 Sunbeam S7 Deluxe.
Almost.
I have one part leftover.
Does anyone recognize this?
Thanks.

Anyone know what size stud holds the rear Hardy-Spicer joint to the rear drive unit?
Thanks.

British Bikes / Ariel Arrow SS Ignition Key
« on: December 24, 2024, 04:25:06 PM »
I just picked up a 1962 Ariel Arrow SS project bike. A quick review tells me that I’m going to need quite a few parts to get this thing restored, as well as a paint job. It appears somewhere in its life it received a coat of brush applied latex paint.
I’m starting my quest with an ignition key.
Does anyone know any sources Arrow ignition keys?

A picture would be helpful in determining what type key I might be needing.

Thanks.

British Bikes / James ML with no spark
« on: December 14, 2024, 07:11:00 PM »
I have a 1947 James ML that won't make a spark.
I have had the flywheel re-magnetized, installed a new coil, rebuilt the points with new fiber washers, honed the points themselves to remove pits, installed a new condenser, a new sparkplug, and replaced all ignition related wiring and still no spark.  The timing is spot on as best I can understand from the Villiers manual.
It may be that the flywheel is not going onto the crankshaft far enough, but I don't have a reference to determine this.  It looks like the lighting coils are only covering about half the magnet.  It is about 1.5 cm from the outside edge of the flywheel to the front edge of the ignition armature.

Does anyone have any pics of a flywheel in place or any other suggestions.  I'm pretty much stymied at this point.

British Bikes / Tap, Tap
« on: August 20, 2022, 10:16:45 PM »
Ater getting the carbs on the 1973 Bonneville to not leak, I took it out for a ride around the block for it's inaugural shakedown.
It flunked.   :-\

The motor starts easily and runs nicely with good acceleration.   Instruments, lights, brakes, etc. work nicely.

Problem is it sounds like someone is tapping on the primary case with a small hammer when you're riding along.  It only does it with the clutch engaged, but the noise seems independent of engine speed or bike speed. It's also a bit irregular in frequency.  Maybe it gets louder on acceleration.

I did put the bike on a jack and run it thru the gears while it was still in the shop.  No sounds coming from the primary case at that time.

Any suggestions on where to start finding this one?

British Bikes / Carb leak
« on: August 09, 2022, 08:36:41 PM »
Trying to put the finishing touches on a 1973 Triumph Bonneville refurbishment.
It's all together, carbs synched as good as I'm gonna get 'em.   Bike runs pretty well.

Problem is on cold start.
But when I push down on ticklers and let up, the gas keeps coming out unless I give each carb a gentle tap.

Says to me the floats are wanting to stick, but it does seem odd that it's both and consistent.

I've done a thorough clean on the carbs, replaced the float needles, cleaned jets, etc.

Any ideas, suggestions, etc.

I'm thinking a belt sheath for a small hammer might work.   :P

British Bikes / 1973 Bonneville carb adjustment?
« on: July 24, 2022, 04:47:41 PM »
I am in the ending throes of the serious recommissioning of a 1973 Triumph T140V junkyard dog.  It's looking pretty good.

Now in trying to get it to run properly, it's not being terribly cooperative.

Good news is that after almost 20 years of setting around and an electronic ignition, it started 2nd kick.
Bad news is that it idles like it has a 3/4 race cam.  I've pulled alternating sparkplug wires, while it running, and it struggles and stops when the right plug is disconnected.  That points to something amiss on the left side.  It will accept throttle which leads me to the idle circuit, but the mixture screw seems to have no impact.

I used the initial settings in the  workshop manual to get it started, but any change in those settings doesn't result in any smoothing of the idle.

 What should I do?

Thanks.

I did adjust the throttle cables so both slides move simultaneously.

British Bikes / 1973 Bonneville exhaust headers
« on: July 06, 2022, 08:41:30 PM »
I'm putting together a 1973 Triumph T140V Bonneville OIF.

The header pipes seem to just stick into the head without any method of attachment, gaskets, etc.  The parts lists I've looked at don't show any gaskets, etc.

What keeps the pipes tight in the head and not leaking profusely?

Thanks.

British Bikes / 1973 Bonneville Wiring
« on: May 29, 2022, 05:14:44 PM »
I'm putting a new wiring harness into a 1973 Triumph Bonneville because somewhere in its past some goob removed most of the old one.

After much head scratching and a few false starts, it's coming together, but one thing I can't intuit out.

Each handlebar switch set has 5-6 wires that have to be hooked up to the harness.

Is that connection made INSIDE or OUTSIDE the headlight shell?

Thanks.
