It is wet sumping when laid up. To stop oil leeching into the chaincase when it is laid up, I remove the sump plug. So, it seems to be oil build up in the crankcase when running and thus leeching over to the chaincase.

Either breather is stuck open, pump scavenge problem,blocked foam filter, scavenge line blocked?

Mini- thanks for that. Engine newly rebuilt, no smoke, rings renewed, seems tight. I am leaning to one of the other two.

Right, I think I have bottomed out the root cause of this problem! Chaincase still leaks - only drips - but annoying nevertherless. What seems to be happening is that the chaincase is filling up with oil, reaching too high a level, and leeching through either the clutch cover gasket or the filler hole gasket.

So where is the oil coming from?  I can think of only two places.

1 - Wet sumping leeching from engine/crankcase when laid up. However, as a precaution against this, I remove the sump plug after a run, let it drain, then replace the oil before a run. Thus I presume it is not possible for the oil to build up in the sump and overflow into the chaincase.

2 - Breather valve u/s. I have pulled the outer chaincase cover and it seems fine. The Maltese cross plate thing looks fine, but I guess it may have been in a permanently open position allowing oil/condensate into the primary chaincase and thus filling it up. Is this feasible? Spring holding the plate looks fine.

Once again, your thoughts are very welcome.

Not much use 'fixing' or improving the gasket if excessive pressure is simply going to blow it again, is there ?

Some of those breathers you can blow into and see what is what, not knowing the matchy one specifically.
Is it the disk flapper valve in the hollow crank output shaft. ?

Can you take off a tappet cover, say, and see if it is breathing excessively.
Of couse, if the rings are worn or stuck and blowby is the problem, then the problems are deeper...

There are some very knowledgeable folks on the Jampot Forum and Yahoo Matchy chatgroup.

No it isn't, but then again I don't know for sure at present whether is is excess presure or a duff joint. I believe the breather is a disc in the crankshaft - on the nearside, and it will be my next port of call if the joint fails again.

I also have to consider the bike is newly rebuilt. That may have some bearing on the matter.

Noticed quite an oil leak coming from the dynamo and the timing cover mating faces. The gasket is of an annular type and of thick cork, and although seemingly not too bad, I have ordered replacements. The sealing seems to be done on the inner edge of the cork gasket and the dynamo "stub" end, and perhaps the vertical face of the dynamo - where there is no gasket.

Possible solutions - O ring instead of cork gasket?
Make up thin gasket for the vertical face?
Apply blue Hylomar or similar - in addition to the above.

Thoughts welcome.

Must admit I still have not looked at the crankcase breather valve  - on the crankshaft on the other side - as it it under the pressed steel primary chaincase and I don't really want to disturb it. I understand  pressure may be build up in the timing cover and blow things if this valve is u/s

One of these for sale locally. Good mechanical nick. Light blue paintwork good, silencers very good, matching numbers, bit let down by the rims being somewhat tarnished. A good one for an original resto I feel. 2700 should get it. Started first kick. Thoughts welcome.......

I shall run it again and see. I am assuming the initial problem was the joint wasn't great. If it leaks again from the same place now, then yes, breather diaphragm or something - I have already cleaned out the foam filter thing.  Already a member of AJSMOC - very good club, and have had some good responses.

Triumph refers to existing 66 Bonnie.

Pump return flow is fine back into the tank - so I assume no issues there. Pump is seperate gear arrangement for both supply and return. A swine for wet sumping....but that's another story.

PRV I believe just allows oil pressure to build up for onwards distribution? The piston and spring seem fine - so I assume unless it is relieving pressure, oil is going where required rather than into the timing case. Even if it did relieve, pressure within would be practically zero due to volumetric expansion, unless full of oil  :o!

It's an addition to the Triumph. Comparing and contrasting is quite interesting.

Oil flowing out of the top edge of the mating suface twixt timing cover and crankcase. Oily right boot and gearlever ensued. Bike (59 Matchless G9) is newly overhauled - not by me - so currently cautiously riding around to establish confidence.

To remedy the above, cover removed, mating surfaces flattened as much as feasibly possible, screw holes deburred, flexoid gasket made, mating surfaces painted with Wellseal, Monograde 50 to be used intead of the previous 20/50. All now ready for test ride.

Qs

The leak was close to the oil pressure relief valve - spring and piston affair in the crankcase. Would there be any preponderance for a leak in this area? I am guessing that the void under the cover should not be pressurized.

Any thoughts as to root cause - apart from dodgy mating surfaces.

I think you can still make a bit of money from a classic bike, providing one buys wisely in the first place - which clearly he didn't. It helps if you can read the obvious engine stamps! 

I am on the lookout for something to strip and restore, but thin on the ground. Perversely, basket cases are almost as much as the decent running bikes.....and yes Ian, I would like something a little different.

Update - viewed last night. Total waste of time. Frame clearly stamped T100S, engine clearly stamped 3TA, head looked like a 350 also. No spark when cranked and battery hooked up, needed paint/electrics and Lord knows what else as it didn't fire up. He was firm at 2850! - which as a decent 59 5TA just sold on Fleabay for 2800 is optimistic to say the least.

I am exactly with you there......The owner tells me he has simply given up on it. He has a modern T100 and cannot get on with the controls of the older bike, connot be bothered fixing it, basically wants rid. However, as you say if it was an easy fix, why not fix it and command a higher price....He did say it ran last summer.

Could all be genuine, could be big trouble....difficult to know without firing it up, but I quite like the look of it and the engines on these things are pretty solid I believe.

Non-matching numbers apparently.

One for sale close by. Tempting. Deos not run - I am told it did, but battery has died...hmmm, and when it did run, it was lumpy. Could be a relatively easy fix perhaps....It looks to be all there. Paintwork/chrome seems OK...could be a goer at 2500 notes.....

Just a thought on the primary chaincase. I am asssuming it is leaking from there - as when it was running, quite a quantity of oil dripped out (when the bike was stationary and presumably when running) in the vicinity of the lower portion of the chaincase and I have noticed a weep there beforehand. However, when left for a few minutes after running and when cold, there are no leaks at all.

I am wondering therefore if the leak is not from elsewhere - as if it were chaincase, would it not continue to drip?

I guess I can measure the level of oil inside and see if it is dropping......

Mini - I have it, and I am digesting. Very many thanks. To add to my woe, I also managed to mash the speedo drive this weekend, but therein is a whole different ballgame - I fear poor PO assembly........
