British Bikes / Re: Spanners and sockets

I'm restoring a 1930s Francis Barnett Black Hawk with Royal Enfield hubs and was supprised to find the spindles on both are 7/16 unf. Perhaps it was done to ensure the correct nuts were used. I would have thought that unf was quite rare in the 30s.

I worked for an old firm of engineers in the early 60s and had to be careful when getting nut and bolts from the stores. Some of the bins still had large hex mixed in with small. I also was told the change was due to material shortage during the war.

Don't know about the C12 but as far as I know, all C11 bikes were fitted with C10 frames and marked as such. Best get on the c10c11c12 forum and ask the real experts.

Didn't Watsonsians take over Swallows some years ago? Perhaps they still have records.

All my bullets have a single lipped roller as the inner bearing.

It could be any one of the FB models of 1928 to '32. Referred to as "built like a bridge" frame. They had 150 or 200cc Villiers engines and some had autolube. Mine is a Black Hawk but there was also a Lapwing and possibly others. Normally named after birds (feathered types).

A new coil is useless without a good condenser and clean points.

A C11 would have small screw holes forward of the kneepad holes, but thay might have been filled. Also on the offside underneath were mounts for a bicycle type tyre pump

Have sent parts to and received parts from Aus with no problems, although there might be import duty above a certain value.
