British Bikes / Re: George Clarke Motors a formidable force
« Last post by SeaVenture on February 21, 2024, 04:03:55 PM »
I realise that it is many years since this post was active but having only recently discovered it I felt the need to respond, partly in the hope that the original contributors are still with us, but also that the subject of George Clarke Motors should be extended since I was active with the company in the early 1960's.
The original post details the existence of the showroom in Brixton Hill and the Spares Dept on New Park Road, close by, but does anyone remember, or even knew of, the Bike storage facility somewhere in the back streets close by the Spares Dept ?
This was a substantial warehouse behind local terraced houses, accessed through a gated tunnel and a small court-yard with a wooden office/shed.
New and second-hand motorcycles sold from the showroom and bought on hire purchase were shipped to and stored in the warehouse until the buyers finances were completed. The new owner would then be issued with a docket, pink in colour I seem to remember, which he, or she, would present at the warehouse to collect their machine, which we would furnish with a quart of petrol and level checked engine oil, as required.
I feel this will do as an introduction and I will offer more if there is any further interest.

I used something like that to have a sprocket "rebanded".
They machined away the blank's inner, and shrank/welded the circle of teeth onto the old ground-down sprocket's splined hub.
And heated and oil dipped it.

And used a bigger blank, for someone to retooth a cush drive hub for me.

What about this - to be bored and welded? I used a big one for the rear wheel sprocket on my Tri-Greeves.

That reminds me of someone who I came across, who had a significantly large quantity of
Norton Navigator piston rings, in various oversizes.
We calculated that based on demand, he had approx 40,000 years of supply !!
He did have rather a lot ....

I wonder what is the world-wide annual demand for lightweight Albion gearbox sprockets? I have a sprocket box, so now I'll have to go out and look.

Wasn't I ??

You have to stop thinking like a hobbyist and start thinking like a business owner.

I see that Villiers Services are obviously getting a range of sprockets remade
(if they are not buying up old stock ?)
At quite reasonable prices.
So in quantity its quite economical....

Unless you enquire you’ll never know how much spline cutting would cost. Again, it depends on the capability of the machine shop in question.
As for one-offs it is common practice for a business to have a minimum price for any job. If so I ask how many items I would get for that price. I might only want one but if I can get more for the same price I both have a spare plus others to sell/trade/barter so as to offset my costs. It’s amazing how people pop out of the woodwork when they find out you have this stuff.

I shudder to think what getting a spline cut might be ??

I'm surprised they don't have the model required here ?

Given that I have been having various sprockets made in various numbers over a twenty year period it’s only possible to say the price is reasonable.
There is no ballpark figure as there are too many variables between individual circumstances. We don’t even know what country the enquirer lives in. All we know is that there will be an industrial transmission place not too far away and they can solve his problem.
I can also say it’s not worth the bother of trying to adapt sprockets from other applications. New sprocket blanks are heat treated to leave the centres machinable. Fully formed sprockets such as yours are usually heat treated throughout and a pig to machine. There is no saving in going down that track.
Having stuff made is a business proposition. It has to be reasonable for both sides. No business can make things at a loss nor can they be too expensive as that drives customers away. For repeat business both sides have to walk away happy.

What would that cost - ballpark ?

But keep your eye out.

I have this bunch - for some model of Villiers. ?
While they look a little crusty, they clean up well.
Ex-Singapore stock, superficial cancer.
And by co-incidence, they are 17t.
Make ideal donors to reband a worn out one ?

Have smaller ones also - with the 5-5 splines. But only 12 teeth.
