Gold Star Speedo drive gear
« on: May 04, 2019, 02:19:46 PM »
Hi can anyone provide any tips on removing a worn speedo drive gear on a BSA 350 gold star please?
I have drilled out the retaining pin but still can’t budge the gear itself. Have tried heat and have tried turning it with mole grips - all to no avail. It is currently sitting with we 40 on it in the hope this will penetrate and help free it.

Hi Bigjos
I have found one or two that resist removal
Having the layshaft out of the gearbox helps, grip the dead spiral in a vice and try and turn the shaft with an adjustable spanner or more serious weapon
I had to drill the stub of one out of the shaft after chopping the mangled end off
That looks like a STD box with bushed layshaft??

The kickstart stop needs repair on the box in the photo

Thanks for your help! Have manège to remove and replace the drive gear now. Applied plenty of WD40, and got it to rotate with some stilsons then applied more WD40, left it for three days and had at it with some mole grips and finally managed to pull it out!
Have used emery paper on the shaft of the new one to ease the fit a little!
Thanks for tip about kick start stop - have ordered a new one and will fit that before reassembling the gearbox.

Here's a tip for the future....WD40 is a good spray-on lubricant but it's utter rubbish as a release oil ( I still use good old Plusgas) but no release oil would be effective in the oily environment of this speedo drive. ;)

Well it worked for me! But I’ll keep in mind plusgas for the future, thanks
