« on: July 08, 2007, 03:19:11 AM »
hi all what a great site for info i wonder if someone can help me i have been given a 1980 cb500 that has sat in a garage for about five years as i no little about bikes i have only done the basic stuff to try and get it started but still with no joy. (like new plug, new fuel, new bat)
on the side of engine (kick start side) i feel there should be a cable that links to brackets but it is not there. i can not get hold of a manual for it and the guy i got it from is abroad. i can send pics of engine and so on if needed.
PLEASE HELP AS IVE GIVEN MYSELF 2 WEEKS OR ITS GOING . as the wife is moaning thanks all

Are you certain it is a CB500? As there were no 1980 model CB500s

Do you mean CX500?
Or CB550?
What type of engine is it?

Thanks for E-mailing the photos to me and it confirms what I was thinking as I was reading your post when I received your E-mail, it's probably (without checking the number) an XL 500 engine as these can be fitted to the CB250RS, in which case the missing cable would probably be the automatic decompressor (compression release) cable that would normally be operated by the kick starter.

Here is some info:
