Dirty old tank (Honda CB72)
« on: February 04, 2008, 04:30:18 AM »
My fuel tank's off for a re-spray shortly but the inside's coated with fine powdery rust. This is gonna give filter/carb problems 'less I do something about it.
Figure to wash it out first of all with hot soapy water to flush out the loose, but anyone got any idea's what I should follow that with?

Cheers you lovely people. ;)

A handful of nuts and bolts. Shake the tank trying to clean all portions, add a little gasoline (don't forget to seal up the openings), and shake it some more.  Drain the tank, dump the nuts and bolts, put a little gas in and repeat until clean fuel come out. I'd suggest one of the little fuel filters after the petcock in the rubber hose.
Then you can decide if you are going to seal it.

Kreem is the generally accepted method, tank cleaners A and B, followed by a sealer coat.  It does remove metal! So be aware.  Don't get any on the paint.  Both cleaners and the sealer are hard on paints. Follow instructions to the letter.

Excellent rust remover, only removes rust not metal.
