I think it looks like the style of tank used on some Triumphs (Tiger? Trophy?) possibly late forties rather than fifties?
Do you have any reason for thinking 50's?

Thanks for the answer, I'm not really sure about date - just guessing. I'm trying to identify some of the odd bits in the family shed that don't have a bike to go with them.  I've had a look at triumph photo's and it looks similar to a 52 tiger 100?
