Installing Boyer ignitions
« on: May 06, 2006, 12:38:08 PM »
I decided to install a boyer ignition system Mark III on my 1969 TR6R 650.  I have 2 questions.  Do I need to reconnect the condensers?  The directions say nothing about this so I didn't reconnect.  Next I need help setting the engine to the fully advanced setting.  I believe it is 38  degrees btdc.  Don't own a plunger tool. Can I set this another way? Thanks for any input.

No.

If you remove the circular timing inspection plate from the primary chaincase, you should see a timing pointer on the primary chaincase and also timing marks on the rotor (180 degrees apart)?

Next remove the spark plugs and engage second gear, slowly turn the engine forwards using the rear wheel and either observe (or use a stick to feel) the left hand piston as it moves up towards the TDC position the instructions say "Set the engine to the full advance mark on compression" although this is only to ensure the correct timing mark is used and that the pistons are approaching TDC and not BDC.
As the piston gets near the top of the stroke the correct timing mark on the rotor should pass the pointer on the case.

Turn the engine BACKWARDS until the rotor timing mark just passes the pointer, then turn the engine forwards again slowly until the two timing marks line up exactly, this will set the engine at 38 degrees BTDC. This will set the engine at the correct position to fit the Boyer rotor and plate but it should be remembered that the final timing adjustment MUST be done with a strobe (using the same timing marks) following the Boyer instructions.

Hi,

Timing marks should be the same as it's a 360 degree 4 stroke parallel twin, not a 180 degree 2 stroke twin (Yamaha and Suzuki twins) or 180 degree 4 stroke (Honda CB72 or CB450)

Yes indeed, the timing mark will be the same for both cylinders, the main thing is to use the correct one as there are normally two separate marks on Lucas rotors 180 degrees apart which can cause some confusion.

I agree with L.A.B. but make sure you get hold of the best strobe money can buy guaranteed for an instant flash ie no time loss at 5,000 rpm. If you can't you'll end up advanced, it would be better to stay with the Boyer static timing.
