Hi all,

We are building a 1937 Ariel 500 and have noticed that the head on the engine (which doesn't look like it has been apart) is different to what we been told is the "correct" 1937 head.

Attached are photos of both heads and we would keen to understand which is correct.

Head 1: Head bolt mounting lugs are recessed below the top of the fins and there appears to be redundant oil line lugs near each valve guide.
Head 2: Head bolt mounting lugs are above the top of the fins and there are no oil line lugs near the valve guide

Many thanks.
Ben

Personally, I'd just use the best condition one on the basis that they're so close in design and age that it may well have come from the factory like that anyway.
Alternatively Google a parts list for 1937 and see if the oil line has been added (or even deleted!) for that year.

Thanks Rex,

I am just looking at it from a preservationist perspective - given both heads are in similar condition I think it has some merit in determining which is "correct" for the year. I have checked the manual and it suggests that head two is correct, however others have suggested the manuals do have a number of discrepancies and head one is correct.

If there isn't a simple definitive answer, then we'll do exactly as you say and pick the best option!

Thanks again for the input.

Kind regards
Ben

The bolt holes look larger in pic2  ??
What actually fits may determine what is fitted.....

Is there a difference in the length of the stud holes in the two heads. Maybe the first one was fitted to suit the length of the studs/bolts.
