Hi i am not good with black and white pics of old bikes, i have no idea what this bike is. If anyone knows can you post up cheers.

Its a picture of my Grandad with his bike and mates many years ago, He's the guy at the back of the bike wearing the overalls. It was taken at his garage in Blackpool, my old man told me he was well into bikes. So any info would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like it could be a early 30's Norton

:)   Ariel  twin port  about 1930  looks big so maybe 500cc  Ariel is readable on tank geoffus

Why the hell did I say BSA when even the link I posted was of a Ariel Twin port! I can only assume I had BSA in my head from the last post! I am a Dick Head!

I think this is a 1931 BSA 350cc.

Heres a link to a nice photo of a similar bike

I'm afraid it can't be an Ulster, The last Rudge Ulster to have foot change was the 1931 model and the hand change on this tank is a lot different to the Rudge hand change system.

The other give away is the front fork spring had a chrome plated shroud around it and this photo shows a plain spring. The spring on the Rudges had to be in the shroud as they were so narrow, and lacked rigidity that they would bend sideways and not compress under load.

Another thing to notice is the kick start pedal is fixed in the open position, Ulsters had folding kick starts.

Also, at this angle you should be able to see the Smiths speedo and 8 day clock/revulator and the steering damper on a Rudge.

Sorry to disapoint.

Thanks Leon - and so quickly too ! Do you think, based on the frequency of the vibration, that the photo was taken by a passenger on a similar machine riding alongside ? ;)

Next task is to find out if the Post Office in Ulster used BSAs .

I think its blured because the photographer was following the rider before taking the shot, that way hes sure its in the shot. i.e. like using a shot gun, you need to follow the target with the end of the barrell and then shoot slightly in front of the target to make sure the pellets are on target and not behind.

Is that just confusing?

Identify these bikes! / Re: What is this sidevalve barrel?
« on: October 23, 2008, 01:29:09 PM »
This is a difficult one, I dont know of any manufactures who made a barrel with integral head and a timing chest cover. And its a 2 screw cover rather than the single point fixing of most manufactures.

I had a look at various 1920-30's BSA sidevalve engines and nearly all had BSA cast into the barrell.

I'm wundering if this could be a barrell from a stationary engine or similar?

Identify these bikes! / Re: WHAT IS MODEL FROM RUDGE
« on: August 08, 2008, 06:11:28 PM »
I checked my Rudge Club register last night and it appears the number 6110 is actually a 1932 Engine number. Did you mean Engine number and not frame???

There is a 1932 'Special' in the register with the number 6112 fitted to frame 48286 which the club holds photo's of.

there is also a 1937 Sports Special in the register with frame number 61107 and engine number S3394 and thats in the Netherlands.

i HAVE THE RUDGE
 YEAR-1932
 499 ???CC
 FRAME-6110
 ???

Its either a Rudge 'Ulster' or a Rudge 'Special' both had the same frame and both had similar appearing engines. Does your Rudge have valanced mudguards? If it has, it will most likely be a 'Special'.

If you can, Check the engine number for a U or S prefix, that will tell you exactly what model it is.

Its a WW2 Military WM20 bike to the Civilian De-luxe standard. They didn't make the de-luxe after 1940 so this is an early one. It also has a desert Volkes tank top air filter fitted.
I have one of these De-luxe versions but its not complete as yet. Most of the parts that make it a De-luxe are quite difficult to find.

Do you have one?
