Norton 750 commando
« on: May 26, 2008, 07:56:27 PM »
Need help to identify the year of my 750 commando. It is definitely a 1970 frame (e.g side stand position, headlight/hallow, lugs for pump on back loop and indent in rear guard, handlebar controls, oil tank, chain guard to name a few features) but the number 141971 on the frame, gearbox and engine are apparently 1971 numbers. Only thing I can think of is that they continued making the 1970 model into 1971 for a while. Any one know about this?

It wasn't uncommon for manufacturers to use up their previous year model's stock of parts on the early new year models.

However the 1971 models (with the 1971 model differences) *supposedly* started from engine/frame number 141783 ? So I can't explain why yours appears to be the earlier spec. unless it was part of a 1970 batch that wasn't completed before the '71 models started being built, and somehow ended up with a '71 production number?

You could try the NOC or VMCC (there is a charge for non-members) as they have copies of the factory records, so they may be able to give you more specific production information about your Commando?
