Triumph screw on filters

Hi All' Im wanting to fit a screw on canister filter, I know I can fit it up under the gear box but the clearance aint that good from the ground( for me anyway) so can the filter be mounted on its side allowing more clearance and easier fitting for the oil pipes, I do not see why not, has anyone done this.. Yes, mount it anyway you like. Just be aware that it will spill oil when you unscrew it though...
