Gasket cement - osotite?
« on: January 13, 2017, 08:11:40 PM »
I am about to start the reassembly of a 1950's Guzzi single.

What is the recommended modern gasket cement please.

I shall be doing the same in a month or so.
As always, Wellseal or Blue Hylomar, or even just a greased paper gasket, depending on the particular joint.

Wellseal for me. If the faces are good and have a gasket, grease as Rex says; if not so good then grease on one side, Wellseal on the other.

I prefer Wellseal as you can paint it on with a small paintbrush, thus cutting out the great
oozing blobs of jointing compound that some folk seem to believe is a sign of expertise.

Strictly speaking compound is only necessary on gasketless joints, which is about the only place it was originally used; most paper gaskets are fine with just grease, I cannot remember seeing any new bike with using compounds on paper joints.

Also the thinner the paper the better in most cases.

I agree about the unsightly blobs, although silicone has its uses (exhausts for example).

I always wipe round a Wellsealed joint with a rag dipped in cellulose thinners to remove any slight excess.
