Nothing shows up for that registration on the DVLA website, so I'd guess that it was either written off, dismantled, scrapped or taken off the road before it ever had a V5 registration document, so some time before the mid-seventies when V5 documents were issued by the DVLC (as they were then known) which replaced all the old vehicle log books.

I have wondered in the past when doing this sort of search if a further possibility is that the number has been transferred to another vehicle.

That the DVLA site requires make and number will mean that it will show as 'not known'  if that number now sits on, for instance, a Mercedes Benz.

Once a number has been transferred, it then becomes almost impossible to trace the original history, even if the bike is now still running on an age-related plate.

If you know the frame number, you could try advertising in the specialist press and if you have lots of time to spare, you could search the DVLA site for TOF 109 under every make on their list to see if it is still current.

The days are gone when it was possible to get a friendy Policeman to run a search. It is now literally 'more than their job's worth' Maybe a wheel-clamping firm would do it though ?

The moral here is to never sell a Norton - you'll always regret it !  ;)

We'd love to see the photo Scotty !

Sadly, even thoroughbreds like Dominators have a fairly low survival rate compounded by the desirability of the frames for building 'specials'

When was the bike last known alive ? As LAB says, it will have been put on the computer if it was still taxed in the 1970s and still had its original number.

You only have to look on eBay to see how few old bikes (and cars) have transferrable registrations (i.e. original).  I have long thought along the same lines as RichP.  I have searched the DVLA site for a trace of my old 1955 Speed Twin YRA 46 with no success, but I like to think it may still be around with a different Reg.
DVLA sell plates quite frequently.  I wonder why they don't sell redundant registrations on specific request?  I am sure they would make useful funds out of it.  If they did I would be first in line for YRA 46 to put on the Speed Twin I am sorting out.

The website below doesn't require the make to be entered, in fact it gives you the make (and sometimes the model) for free, if the registration number is entered (I tried some of my own own bike registrations and they checked out OK):
https://www.mycarcheck.com/

There's no record of 'TOF 109' (or 'YRA 46')  so it probably hasn't been transferred to another vehicle.

Thanks LAB. I've bookmarked that one.

More thanks L.A.B.  I am researching as many of the (hundreds) of cars operated by my family in the course of a taxi and hire business between 1913 and 1982 as I can.  That site is the answer to my prayers.  I have lots of registrations from memory and over 100 photos which I may now be able to follow up for survivors.
Actually, the business was started by my Great Grandfather around 1870, but unfortunately unregistered horse carriages etc. are beyond tracing, though I have photos of some..
One 1951 car, in which I passed my driving test in 1956, I still own, but that car alone had nine identical companions plus a matching hearse.

The starting date of 1913 is dictated by the first motor taxi operated by my Grandad.  I have photos of that - a Belsize.

Thanks again.

One result so far, just entering random numbers from memory.

EHE 1, originally on an Austin Sheerline Limousine, originally the Barnsley Mayoral Car, is now on a Jag XK. Whether the original car still exists with an age related plate is still uncertain though..

That result is from about 15 nil entries.

Incidentally, I believe the Barnsley Mayoral Car was replaced by THE 1!

Addition :- I have a car with a current V5c, but which has not been licenced for several years.  That comes up on the DVLA database, but NOT on the Check my car one.

The other option is that they HAVE been on the DVLA registers, but have since been scrapped or written off.
A couple of Jap Craps I've had over the years which I know were on the DVLA registers don't show on either site.

Seems like some people actually do send in the V5Cs after breaking a bike.... ;)
