British Bikes / Oil leaking into primary drive B40
« on: August 17, 2019, 09:58:27 PM »
Sorry me again. Having completely rebuilt my gold star and got it started and running I am seeing a large oil leak which seems to come from the primary drive casing. I drained all the oil from the primary drive and ran the engine for a while but after some time I found the primary drive had lots of oil in again which was spilling out of the casing around the gearbox shaft.
I am told The is an oil relief in the centre of the crankshaft and this may be the source of my problem?
Any suggestions?

British Bikes / BSA Gold Star inlet and exhaust oil feed
« on: June 01, 2019, 05:58:17 PM »
Does anyone know which screw goes to which side (inlet and Exhaust) on a Gold Star Oil feed to the head. The oil feed holes on the two screws are quite different - one is probably less than .060" whilst the other is more like 0.100"?

Well at the end of the day it seems the problem is probably lack of choke on the carburettor. I put my hand over the inlet and it revs up fine, then once it has warmed up properly its fine! Thanks for all your suggestions.
Incidentally the timing was out just a little too

Sorry should have added that I have fitted electronic ignition so no issues with magnetos etc.
Carb has been stopped down and cleaned so pretty sure there are no blocked jets.
Could it be a timing issue?

British Bikes / BSA Gold Star misfiring

Hi, looking for help once again....after spending a year refurbishing an old 350 gold star everything is now up together and looking good. It starts and runs fine in the workshop but when I take it out for a test ride it misfires as I try to accelerate, so that I have to ease the throttle back then just open gently to get some revs going - and even then it won’t rev very high.
In the workshop it seems to rev up ok......
I’m thinking it’s a carb. / fuel issue but not sure how to sort it?
Any tips appreciated.

Thanks for your help! Have manège to remove and replace the drive gear now. Applied plenty of WD40, and got it to rotate with some stilsons then applied more WD40, left it for three days and had at it with some mole grips and finally managed to pull it out!
Have used emery paper on the shaft of the new one to ease the fit a little!
Thanks for tip about kick start stop - have ordered a new one and will fit that before reassembling the gearbox.

Hi can anyone provide any tips on removing a worn speedo drive gear on a BSA 350 gold star please?
I have drilled out the retaining pin but still can’t budge the gear itself. Have tried heat and have tried turning it with mole grips - all to no avail. It is currently sitting with we 40 on it in the hope this will penetrate and help free it.

Everything is moving freely now and engine start and runs sweetly! It’s a new piston in a rebored cyclinder so was probably a close fit anyway.
Thanks for all the advice.

Yep - looks like Ive got the pipes connected the wrong way round!

Can just make out the marking on the outside of the crank saying "return" and like a numpty I've connected the feed there! Will swap them over tomorrow and try again.

Watch this space!

Thanks for all the help

Ian

British Bikes / BSA Gold Star oil return
« on: March 23, 2019, 03:55:52 PM »
Hi, I have just finished rebuilding a DB32 350cc Gold Star. It started fine and ran for a few minutes then stopped. When I tried to kick start it I could not turn it over. Left it for little while and squirted oil in bore and its freed up again now.
On investigation I cannot see any oil returning from the oil pump - since the return pipe also feeds the oil to the rocker box I am thinking this is the problem.
I have taken the pessure release valve off and confirm oil is being pumped that far. Also took timing cover off and pretty sure oil is getting to the crank and cam shaft feeds (difficult to be certain!)
So having read other topics on this page I wonder if I just need to fill the sump up so that there is oil there to be pumped?
I have poured about a 150 ml into the crankcase but still no sign of anything coming out of the return.

The other thought is that feed and return pipes might be transposed - but if this was the case would I still see oil out of pressure relief port!? Anyone know which is supposed to be which (I have the outer pipe connected as the feed and the inner as return?)
