Japanese Bikes / Re: 1963 Honda CB 72

Thanks for your advice L.A.B.
A Bernard Saunders also got in touch. Knows CB72 engines inside out. Told me the bright ring definatley goes on the top. The dark one is the oil scraper ring.
I took photo's as I assembled and as you will see from the attached, got it the wrong way around. It's not a good enough shot to make out the chamfer you mention but I'll have a good look when I'm back in there.
Cheers for your help.

Phil

Hi all.  Renovating a 1963 CB72. Need to know which of the new rings I've bought, goes on top. The oil ring is obvious but the others are bright and dark. Which one goes on top? ( I've found the marks so I know which way up they go)
Thanks
Phil

My fuel tank's off for a re-spray shortly but the inside's coated with fine powdery rust. This is gonna give filter/carb problems 'less I do something about it.
Figure to wash it out first of all with hot soapy water to flush out the loose, but anyone got any idea's what I should follow that with?

Cheers you lovely people. ;)

Japanese Bikes / '65 Honda CB72 Ally. How do you keep it bright?
« on: January 24, 2008, 05:03:08 AM »
Most of you will have you're own ways to keep bike alluminium bright.
I've got through a bale of wirewool and a 12 gallon tub of "autosol" bringing up my ally bits to a chrome like shine while I rebuild the Honda, but I know from my experiences back in the 60's that the ally will soon dull off again.
So. What do you use?
Give me you're recommendations of  coatings available today. What do the "pro" renovators use?
Thanks all.
(I'm going to have to fit a grease nipple to my elbow).

I tentativly tried this without knowing they unscrewed, but will now "lean" on them with confidence.

Loving rebuilding this bike! Had one back in '65.
I've now got trouble "opening" the front forks though. Want to change seals etc.
Managed to find and hook out the sprung ring inside the chrome section but it gets me no furthur.  ???
Someone out there shine the light for me please.
