i agree with neale sounds like the valve timings wrong, as the points run off the end of the cam.

hi you would use prime if the bike has stood for a while and the fuel has evaporated from the carbs or if you have drained them maybe to clean them,on is the normal running position after you,ve primed them does it die iff you run on prime.

it seems as though the engine or at least the crankcases have been replaced at some point which in my view reduces the value,to get top dollar either here in uk or the us the numbers should match the model(im not talking engine and frame numbers here because i beleive most bsa,s engine and frame numbers did,nt match)gp carbs and 190 front brake are good selling points but in reality they were not the best,, bsa had problems with gp carbs fitted to the spitfire, and the 190 front brake is not as good as the single sided 8 ins one , in my opinion the A65LC (lightning clubman)is the more desireable bike,i,ll go for 3.500 to 4.000 us dollars on this spitfire

if you,re not sure whether its the engine or gearbox thats jammed dismantle the primary drive and try to turn engine and gearbox individually

hi goldie as twolitre sugests you have probably increased the compression and the only thing that influences jet sizes needle positions  is compression  i dont think it influences ignition timing  and beleive it or not  the more compression you have the smaller jets you need and a lower needle position  regardless of which carb you use  set it up as if it was bog standard and work from there weakening the jets and needle one step at a time  if you ve got a longish slightly uphill straight near you that would be ideal for plug chops  hope this helps good luck

hi degsey im not a bantam expert but have had a few over the years first bike was a d1  is it hard to start does it emit white smoke or excessive smoke on start up i would be tempted to take head and barrell off and have a look at the rings one could be broken easy done .while top end is off check crank seals one could have been damaged on assembly again easy done has the engine been built to catalogue spec for the d1 of that year .main things in a 2 stroke for loss of power is primary compression secondry compression fuel air mixture and exaust blocked  and ignition timing  have a look at bantam racing website the guys on there are experts hope this helps
