British Bikes / M O T ing a Brit Bike
« on: July 22, 2009, 09:52:07 AM »
 :)  Hi everyone,
My Triumph 5ta is due an MOT next month.Being an old bike [1955] are there any problems associated with getting it MOTed.
I know my luck i'll get a spotted oik failing it because it drips oil abit, isn't fitted with a catalytic converter or even has indicators :o
Are there any pitfalls i need to watch out for, many thanks  :)

Looks clean,dunnit? ;)

If it works OK when hot then presumably most, if not all, parts are adjusted correctly and not too worn, so I'd be looking at oil grade or contamination as causing this.

Strip it out and clean or replace the plates. You'll need to sort the adjuster and it's nut too.

I am pleased to say she isn't a fair weather bike :)you should've seen her 2 days ago when i went to work in a storm, she looked a real mess then ;D
I am using sae 30 in her.
To a non mechanic you both make it sound so simple :)
Thanks for the advice ,i will see how she gets on as she is rideable at the moment but if she reaches a point where there is a real problem i will have to be brave and go for it :o
 Thanks again [smiley=beer.gif]

British Bikes / clutch adjustment on Triumph speedtwin 5ta
« on: April 16, 2009, 03:59:23 PM »
Hi All ,I have tried a search before asking but no luck,so all advice welcome please. :)
My Triumph speedtwin 5ta H7810 unit construction clutch is dragging abit when the bike is cold.
It can take 20+ kicks of the kickstarter with the clutch in before the plates release [ mostly less]and if the bike is in neutral the rear wheel is being driven when the engine is running.
Sometimes i can start the bike put the clutch in and when i engage first gear it can either stall the engine with a big lurch or you can ride a few yards with the clutch in before it releases[ no good for your nerves if you are heading for an immovable object  [smiley=shocked.gif] ].
Once she has been used it is normally ok for a while.
I have tried adjusting the clutch via the cable at the lever end but when i looked at the locking nut and adjusting screw behind little cover on the side of the clutch case the lock nut and screw turn as one and not independently as i supposed they would have done :o [smiley=undecided.gif]
Once the bikes running and warmed up she is fine ,just seems to be when she is first started for a while.
I am not a mechanic and i can live with it if it is a quirk of the bike but if it is causing mega damage i will need to get it looked at.
 Thanks for any imput.

:)Don't be put off by the cost if they do they job properly first time.I had a Speedtwin rebuilt by a cowboy and it needed doing again so cost me more than i wanted.
I haven't used any of the firms linked on here so i can't speak for them but do your homework, get some feedback and stick with people that do it properly first time.

I use ep 90 in the gear box, straight 30 fuch[sp] i believe in the primary chaincase i still have the straight 40 for the engine although it will be a while before it needs changing, having said that I've managed about 60 miles on it this week :)

British Bikes / Riding in this time of year-uk winter
« on: January 18, 2009, 12:25:10 PM »
:)  Obviously i am not going to ride the motorbike in dangerous road conditions but unfortunately needs must when the devil drives and i may need to use the bike to get me through the traffic in the rush hours this week. :(
Not only that the sun is shining and i really want to keep "sharp" and up to speed on the bike [Triumph Speedtwin 5ta].I don't want to be a fair weather rider either.
I am more worried about the road muck,we have had alot of rain here in the last day or so so i am hoping any road salt may have been washed away.
Any hints on what to wash the bike down with after using it please,i normally use a liberal amount of wd40 and oily rags.
All advice and hints appreciated as ever :)Many thanks

:) Things are only worth what someone pays for it.My bike is'nt a bike meant for showing,i hope to ride it all year and in most weathers [assuming it stays reliable].
I have seen too many bikes turn up on trailers to bike shows [only if no clouds in the sky] ,why own it??.
There seems to be a "purists" group and a "practicality" group of owners but unfortunately we are all open to con artists  :-[
  Happy riding all  :)

British Bikes / What tools or spares do you carry with you.
« on: October 09, 2008, 01:22:15 PM »
:) Yesterday I took the opportunity and had a 40 mile ride in lovely weather on my Triumph 5Ta speedtwin [makes a change this year] .
Whilst riding along i had packed a spark plug spanner and a couple of screw drivers - just incase.
Now i am not mechanically minded and i did wonder if the bike broke down what could i actually repair.
  My questions are,
1,What spares or tools do you carry with you [my bike did'nt come with a toolkit]

2,What running repairs could you realistically make on the roadside or have made on the roadside.
All stories on repairs and advice welcome please ,Thanks  :)

Trumper,
15 miles away, you say. There and back and the old oil will be hot enough to drain nicely!
:)  I took it to work last night and put about 30 miles on it,problem was the headlight switch shook itself off >:( so had to improvise with a small spanner to turn it on  :o and coming home 02-00 we had fog,not the nice ride round the back roads i had hoped for  ::)
Oh well i had better look for another light switch, any ideas  ;D
Welcome to the world locktight and spares   :)
