Thanks for the advice Rien.  It might seem a simple question but when you can't use the original oil stipulated then it is useful to ask around to see what works best for others.  I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Regards
Steven

About to kick over the 1951 Norton for the first time but need advice on lubrication.  I will be running Shell V-power in the tank but need to know best oil to use for Engine, Gearbox and Chain bath.

British Bikes / History of my Norton
« on: December 31, 2008, 03:35:42 AM »
With the assistance of YaBB members I have been able to establish the year of my Norton ES2 motor (1951 490cc) and frame(1956).  As I embark on this project it raises my curiosity as to its history and when these two might have come together.  Is it possible to trace motor and frame through some archive or data base of old Norton ESes.  My motor is F4 34410 and frame 4 - 67486.  I know the bike went for auction at Sothebys in Sydney on 7th August 1994 however that is all I have.  Any help appreciated

Thanks RichP and L.A.B. for the response.  I found the Frame No on the fuel tank support lug as suggested. It has 4 then below it 67486 which would make it a 1956 frame as you pointed out.  I suppose I therefore have a 1951 motor in a 1956 frame.  Now down to the project.  Cheers

I have just purchased a Norton ES2 with Engine No F4 34410. According to records this is a 1951 ES2 however 34410 puts it at 1950.  Nevertheless I cannot determine the year model of the frame which appears more recent than 1950/51.  Can someone help me as I cannot locate a frame number which I understand should be the same as the engine.
