British Bikes / 1936 Sunbeam model 9 parts wanted!
« on: February 03, 2010, 06:35:32 PM »
All,

I have just bought a nice Sunbeam model 9 from 1936 that has a few bits missing. I'm looking for a replacement toolbox (Steel backed, leather fronted item) a Sunbeam prop stand, a good Lucas 8" headlight and a E3HM Dynamo working or not working, and any service sheets / manual. Can you help? If I can get a good pattern to work from I can probably make the toolbox, but will need some measurements / pics etc

Hi,
just seen your ad. Did you manage to get a rubber boot for the airfilter for the A7? I was looking for one too and managed to get one from Sheffield British Bikes for under a tenner.

I hope this helps. If you already have managed to get one, please forget!

Wanted Bikes / Velocette Venom
« on: May 25, 2009, 11:01:35 PM »
Hi,

I've just joined this forum, and am after a bit of help. I'm looking for a Velocette Venom in good useable condition. Has anyone got one they no longer want?

I have a long stroke 1948 BSA rigid A7 that has done approximately 1400 miles since it's engine rebuild, recon mag & dynamo, rechromed tank, new wheel rims and spokes , bearings, rewire etc that I would be willing to trade / part exchange for the right bike. If anyone is interested, please feel free to contact me.

Regards

JIm :)

British Bikes / Re: D14 for commuting?
« on: October 17, 2009, 07:26:39 PM »
Hi Both,

thanks for the info. I plan to convert the electrics to 12 volt and add Halogen lights, and replace the rectifier with a modern Japanese item, probably 2nd hand from the local breakers yard. I may leave the ignition as Standard for now and see how it goes.

Can anyone suggest an improvement to the front brake? I've thought about trying to fit a modern Jap hub / wheel fitted with a drum brake to see if it improves things. Has anyone done this already, and if so, what make and model would be appropriate and easiest to fit? Would a CG 125 etc work?

British Bikes / D14 for commuting?

Hi All,

I've been offered a late Bantam D14/4 and am thinking of using it for regular commuting back and to from work. I cover 28 miles a day, 5 days a week. Is a Bantam such as this a serious proposition for daily use today? Is there any improvements to the basic machine that should be carried out? What sort of £££ would an electronic ignition conversion cost and upgrade to 12 volt electrics cost? Would it be worth it? Any tips on improving the front brake?

British Bikes / 1948 A7 oil seal replacement
« on: September 17, 2009, 08:40:25 PM »
All,

I have a 1948 rigid A7 that has sprung a leak from one of the forks. I currentlt have said fork in bits with a replacement oil seal ready to go in. The problem I have is that I haven't got the official BSA tool for dismantling the chromed oil seal holder from the lower fork. I have tried a car type oil filter strap to no avail. Is there another way around this, or do I need to buy the official tool?

British Bikes / Re: BSA Bantam D7 cutting out and failing to start...
« on: July 29, 2009, 11:11:20 PM »
Dave,

it sounds like the outer cable is too long, so you can modify it yourself by shortening it.  Try cutting the outer cable carefully with a hacksaw, without damaging the inner cable, replace the  steel ferule and adjust until you achieve the return you require. If in doubt, give me a call towards the weekend and we'll have a look together.

Having discussed getting his bike running better earlier on with Dave, can anyone suggest a good electronic ignition kit suitable for the D7? Any problems found fitting one?

Dave,

had a look at the bantam it's the fuel filter from the tank to carb blocked with crud. It's now running fine and should go ok!

British Bikes / Re: Rigid A7 engine breather fault?
« on: July 15, 2009, 10:55:00 PM »
H iDavid,

and thanks for the response. To answer your question though, no it's not wet sumping and doesn't seem to suffer from this either. I agree with your thoughts on the anti wet sumping valves, too easy to forget and leave closed with disasterous results! The T160 owners I feel have the right answer!

I'll check for any line blockages and additionally check the breather.

Thanks again

British Bikes / Rigid A7 engine breather fault?
« on: July 12, 2009, 10:45:41 PM »
Hi All,

I'm after a bit of advice. I went out for a good run today on my 1948 Rigid A7 and when I got back I found quite a bit of oil around the right hand silencer, oil tank, gearbox. It looks as if all my fibre washers etc have gone, but one curious point is that the seal on the oil tank cap also seems to be leaking as oil was evident from the cap.

I'm just wondering if my breather is blocked and is creating negative pressure, forcing oil back and causing the leaks including through ther oil cap (my washers, etc are recent so I think something else is at fault here)

Suggestions on checks etc would be greatly received

Jim :-/

Yeah I agree totally with the previous comments. I had a problem with my Altette horn, so whilst it was in bits I fiited a bulb horn to get it through the MOT. The tester wasn't a young bloke, but insisted that it wasn't legal and would have to fail it!!! I argued the toss and ended up leaving him to check with the DVLA on the computer whilst I went for a coffee elsewhere to cool down. It turns out that they are illegal in the UK post 1973 or something, my bike is somewhat older than that, being a 1948 rigid A7!!! ;D

I no longer give this tester any of my hard earned ££££ and go elsewhere where they have a bit of common sense

British Bikes / Matchless G15 CSR
« on: June 26, 2009, 08:54:41 PM »
All,

I'm thinking of having a look at a mid 60's Matchless G15CSR (the one with the Norton Atlas Engine fitted). Any thoughts? My Dad used to have a1963  AJS 650 CSR, (The model prior to the Norton stuff) so I'm quite keen on learning a bit about the later variants.

British Bikes / Re: help on BSA A7 plunger 1948 colors?
« on: June 24, 2009, 09:20:15 PM »
Hi,

the all black or Devon red sounds right and is correct to the BSA pre unit singles book. I too have a 1948 A7, but mine is rigid. I wouldn't get too hung up on colour schemes though, mine has black Cycle parts, chromed tank with British Racing green painted panels on it, not original, but Ijust fancied being different!
