HAVE YOU CHECKED VALVE CLEARANCES I KNOW YOU HAVE A NEW CARB BUT IF IT RUNS FOR A FEW MINUTES THEN CUTS OUT IT COULD BE A STICKY FLOAT NEEDLE THE CHOKES NOT STUCK ON? IS THE PLUG GETTING WET WHEN YOU TRY TO START IT? I WOULD RECHECK THE CARB AND MAKE SURE THERE IS NO AIR LEAK WHERE IT BOLT TO THE HEAD IS THE MAG OK AND NOT BREAKING DOWN AS IT GETS WARM ALL YOU CAN DO IS RECHECK EVERYTHING CANT BE MUCH WRONG IT I LIKE A CHALLENGE!!

I THINK IF YOUR VALVE TIMING WAS OUT IT WOULD BACKFIRE THRO THE CARB OR EXHAUST IF ALL THE MARKS LINE UP IT SHOULD BE OK PLUS YOU WOULDNT GET IT TO RUN AT ALL,DO YOU HAVE TO SET THE MAG ON FULL ADVANCE THEN SET THE TIMING? TRY NEW PLUG HAD THE SAME TROUBLE ON A 350 AJS AFTER ENGINE REBUILD WOULD FIRE AND RUN THEN DIE OUT PUT NEW PLUG IN WENT FIRST KICK IS THE PLUG GETTING WET AFTER KICKING THE LIFE OUT OF IT, IS THE BREATHER HOLE IN THE TANK CLEAR? I WOULD TRY A NEW PLUG FIRST THEN SEE WHAT HAPPENS THEN CHECK THE CARB IF IT RUNS THEN DIES IT COULD BE THE FLOAT IGNITION TROUBLE TENDS TO STOP SUDDENLY

hi,if your doing a total strip down with that sort of miles i would replace bigend shells clean the sludge trap out if that gets blocked it cuts off the oil to the big ends check the main bearings they should be ok get the barrels measured up for wear you should get away with new rings and a hone of the bores regrind the valves it all depends if its had regular oil changes these engines self destruct if not looked after, cams etc should be ok if in doubt oil seals replace there not a lot money and you dont want to put it all back together then find out you overlooked something for the sake of a couple of poundswhen its all done you might want to think about an oil filter conversion it really does help i have just done a t140 rebuild just take your time there easy to work on ::)

hi ramos, glad you changed the oil!,i wouldnt bother checking the valves clearance yet
you say it fired up so you must be getting a spark and the timing must be near on
the mark all this you can check once its running i would connect up a clean supply
of petrol then try and start it and get it running its no good just putting petrol
in the lines it needs a continous supply rig something up or put the tank back on
then try it if no go then look for other faults ::)

HI, I TRUST YOU CHANGED THE OILS FIRST AFTER STANDING ALL THAT TIME
BEFORE YOU FIRE IT UP, I THINK I WOULD CONNECT UP TO FRESH PETROL
THEN SEE WHAT HAPPENS THEN GO FROM THERE IF YOU HAVE CLEANED
THE CARBS OUT IT SHOULD RUN THEN YOU CAN FINE TUNE IT

i agree with revband have rebuilt a couple of bikes from the ground up
and the cost of bits soon mounts up and thats assuming you do most
of the work yourself it always costs a lot more than you think and thats
not taking into acount your time but if you can get it for the right price
go for it!

just rebuilt the engine on a 350 single i couldnt believe what its cost so maybe when i sell it i will have to take this into acount also people seem to be buying as an investment which is maybe pushing up prices?
