British Bikes / frame number location

Hi Everyone,
I have a 1973 Triumph TR6R which I believe is an ex- UK police bike. Although the engine number is clearly stamped on the left hand crankcase I cannot locate the frame number. Rumour has it that some Triumphs coming out of the factory at that "confusing" period never had a frame stamp, but I am more inclined to think that at some point in my bikes history the frame was repainted or 'stove enamelled' and obliterated the numbers. I wonder if anyone out there could tell me the places to look for this frame number so I don't have to scrape the whole frame looking for it . Failing that I suppose I could re-stamp it myself, in which case should I use 3mm high or 5mm high metal stamps ?
Thanks
