British Bikes / Triumph GP Engine Number Question

Hello. Does anyone know if the Triumph GP's ( 1948-1950 )had a special engine number and if each GP engine number followed in sequence.
If they did have a certain unique number to set them appart from other Triumph engines then what was it? I know that my Grandfathers GP bike was number T100 97021 R and frame number TF 20015 R. Did the 'R' on the end each time stand for racing? Hope someone can help! Cheers Phil
