British Bikes / Re: Villiers engine ID with photos

Hi ya mate.  Thanks for all the information, but the puzzle only gets more intriguing........I have attached some more pics to show you.  My 247cc XV1-A engine code - AU 1960 you said was a James engine.  As you can see by the pics it has the Coventry Eagle special drive side crankcase to mate with the early enclosed primary chain.  Does that mean I have a hybrid of some sorts.  I have 3 manuals for coventry eagles and the 250cc engines look similar.  The 147cc engine has a different drive side crankcase made of pressed sheet steel similar to the red one in the pics.

I really want to get these as original as possible, so before I get to carried away with making parts and sourcing bits my search continues.

There must be some archives somewhere...................... Can anyone point me in the right direction for my search or where to look next................HELP!

British Bikes / Coventry Eagle Frame ID with Photos
« on: March 07, 2012, 09:34:36 PM »
Hi All

I have finally got round to getting some pictures onto this thing.  I have 2 frames with similar marking format but different numbers.  Looking from underneeth the format is:

FRAME 1

on the left side

 PATTERN No. 283777
 REQ DES No. 731168
 MAT No. 28321/31
 AT No. 2B3737/27

and on the right hand side is:

727410

these frames would have the gear leaver on the outside of the frame, where as the 3rd frame I have would have the gear knob coming through the frame.

Looking from underneeth, the frame ID on this one is:

on the left and is 330I7 I think.  Its quite hard to see.

Non of the ID's match anything I have been able to find in books or on line.  If anyone could identify them it would be great.  there is quite a bit missing from the 3 bikes.  I have the engines (or 3 engines which came with the frames).  the tanks for all 3 are rounded (not the square edge type for soem of the models).  Again I can only assume that they are coventy eagle tanks.  Check my other listing today for the engines which might help identify things also.

Regards

Robin

Hi All

just attaching some photos of the Villiers engines i got with 3 frames that are suposed to be Coventry Eagle Frames.

The engine numbers are:

148cc X11-C is GY 7739  ........ the book says its 1931 - 1940.  Is there any way of being able to narrow that down to a specific year?

Niether of the XV1-A engine numbers match up with anything I have been able to find in books, manuals or on line.  Again is there any way to find the actual year, cause from what I have read up about the Coventy Eagles there were quite a few modifications or upgrades done on a regular basis.

XV1-A is AU 1737
other XV1-A is AU 1960

Regards

Robin

PS I am attaching the Coventry eagle frame photos in another one of these

British Bikes / Coventry Eagle identification

Hi all

I have just purchased 3 Covenrty Eagles in bits and I am trying to identify what the heck I have got.  I have found numbers at the front of 2 of the frames underneath by the yoke. On bike one, on the left side I have what appears to be:

 PATTERN No. 283777
 REQ DES No. 731168
 MAT No. 28321/31
 AT No. 2B3737/27

and on the right hand side is:

727410

I haven't been able to find any info on line as to what these numbers mean.  Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can put an age to these gals and start restoring them to their former glory.

The engines which came with the collection are 2 x 250cc's (XV1-A) and 1 x 148cc (X11-C)

Awaiting some help

Regards

Robin
