You could try a post on the Classic motorcycle racing club (CMRC) website. They have a lot of technical questions about classic racers on there and many seem to get answered as they are mainly read by fellow classic racers.

Japanese Bikes / Re: What was your first Japanese Motorcycle
« on: June 21, 2006, 01:50:30 AM »
My first Jap after Bantams and a 125 Benelli, Cotton Arrow and sundry others was a 1978 RD250 with a coffin tank. Tyres were TT100s which were well worn - "put on some Michelins" said a biker friend so I did and the handling got really scary. Used it 60 miles a day to work and back and eventually holed a piston so I bought a 1976 Honda 400/4 which was a truly great bike until I got hit by a car. Kept the wreck to rebuild but never got it done and finally parted with it 10 years ago but still regret it sometimes.

British Bikes / Re: S O R N    LAW
« on: June 22, 2006, 12:21:25 AM »
. have 2 bikes and a car which have been off the road since long before the SORN law was introduced (one trials bike and two resto projects).
When SORN was introduced I emailled DVLA and their reply said that if the vehicle was already off the road on the date they introduced SORN there was no legal requirement to declare SORN BUT if you did decide to declare them as SORN then you would have to continue to do so each year or face a fine.
I haven't applied for new V5C documents as my understanding is that there is no time limit to apply for the new documnets but once you have them you need to declare SORN and once again continue to declare it or face a fine. I was always worried about forgetting to do the paperwork each year so I thought the best thing was to leave well alone until I need to use the car/bikes again.

British Bikes / Re: Greeves European Champion
« on: June 21, 2006, 01:11:03 AM »
Your man was Greeves works rider Don Smith who was European Trials Champion in 1964 and again in 1967 riding works Greeves.
Don was a colourful character who had a habit of riding the sections with a lighted cigarette hanging out of his mouth. I believe he was involved in most branches of off road motorcycle sport and if you put in a web search for don smith greeves you will find an article about a Greeves engined speedway bike he tried to develop but unfortunately the project came to nothing.
In the 70's he developed the Kawasaki trials bike and ran a trials school at Kelvedon Hatch near Brentwod.
He also wrote  a book about the black art of trials riding and copies are listed often on ebay. If I remember rightly Don still has a cigarette hanging out of his mouth in most of the photos in the book.
I believe he died a few years ago but he certainly won't be forgotten by anyone who was involved in trials during the 60's and 70's.
