British Bikes / Import duty

I wonder if any members have any experience importing vintage parts, originally made in UK, from countries outside the common market. Duty ? VAT ?

The Classic Biker Bar / Re: what was your first bike?

My first bike ?   Not that well known,a 1930 A.K.D. 150cc  OHV. The problem was that the push rods were at the back of the cylinder and due to the revs being so high,(to achieve the speed required by a 17yr old) it was possible for the rods to get so hot they bent !! This was all in 1952. My next bike was a 1930 AJS 600cc side valve (if I remember correctly) V twin. The cylinders ACROSS the frame like a modern Guzzi. Happy days. Now I am restricted to Scotts and Stafford Mobile Pups.

Unfortunately they only have stainless.Because of the amount of welding involved,it must be mild steel.

Don't all laugh ! I am renovating a motor scooter and need a new oil/petrol tank. The tank is a 5"tube of approx 2.5mm thickness. Now then, this tube is available from a multitude of central heating/woodburners/stove manufacturers, but only in stove enamelled, vitreous coated, stainless, variations. None can supply the plain basic steel variety. So,who makes the tube in the first instance,it must start off as steel tube before it is vitrified or whatever ?
The motor scooter is a 1920 Stafford Mobile Pup.

Pleased to report that I now have the required number of Runbaken magnetos to power up my Stafford mobile Pups (when they get finished ! ! ! ) also acquired a MIG welder (£22.00) not working. MIG welder now working,a bit of WD40 &TLC,so a good bargain. Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year to all old bikers.
(People who own old bikes, not necessarily old people, but owning an old bike often keeps old people young)

Hi Leon. I am in the process of building a replica frame for one of the Mobile Pups as the rust moths have decimated one frame. I WILL get round to photos when I'm a bit more organised, but probably after Xmas & New Year. Your introduction has proved to be most worthwhile, thanks very much. Have a good & warm Christmas & New Year. I remember how it was in PNG at this time of the year. Cheers Roger

I wonder if anyone has any documentation relating to RUMBAKEN magnetos. I am restoring a Stafford Auto Scooter and I need any information relating. Photocopies or scans would be most welcome.
