What bike could this be?
« on: May 15, 2009, 11:01:11 PM »
Hello all

My aunt and I was going through some old family pictures and had come across these pictures of my great uncle, great aunt someone else and great great grandfather.
Now I am currious as to what bike this could be, unfortunatly it isnt clear, but firstly thought it was an AJS, but not sure what it says on the tank, I got a book British Bikes of the 30s and come across a company (more than a few) I never even heard of, as most had went after WWII and think it could be an AES.

If anyone could help me identify the bike and that would be great

Many thanks

Nice photos, but not much to see of the bike. However the front fork shape, central spring, filler cap style, and strip headlight mounts (not to mention the block "A.." on the tank), I'd go for Ariel about 1930. The left exhaust pipe would have a mate on the other side, so it would be one of the ohv twin port models, likely a 500. Perhaps something like the Model G: http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/Bike%20Directories/Ariel%20Bikes/pages/Ariel-Model-G-30.htm

Hi
Under magnification the lettering on the tank appears to say Ariel as the other respondent has pointed out.

You may be able to put the photo through some computer  software to enhance the shot.

Cheers
