74' 750 bonny with rear brake problem
« on: August 11, 2010, 06:29:43 PM »
I have this 1974, 750,  T-140E and I am having problems with the rear brake.  After you ride the bike for a period of time with normal riding the rear brake drags and eventually locks up.  If you loosen the bleeder it will let loose and you can move again.  I am thinking that it is the short rubber hose between the master and the caliper that may be colapsed.  Please give me your opinions as the line is pricey and I am trying to make sure before I purchase.  Thhank you

Well, I don't see how you could have a '74 T140E? As Meriden didn't start making the E model until early 1978, in fact there were no rear disc brake (T140V/TR7) models at all before 1975 when Meriden introduced the left foot gear change.

However, it is a possibility that the rubber hose has become collapsed internally. Another very common reason for this problem is usually because someone has screwed the master cylinder assembly too far into the alloy housing, which results in the piston not uncovering the vent port when the brake is released, so the residual pressure within the system can't vent to the reservoir.

I was wrong on the year and you were correct it is a 78.  That aside I have not messed with the master cylinder or any of the brake system it just started having this problem.  I will check this out though to verify that what you are saying is not the cause.  I appreciate the reply.

the line is pricey

I don't know whereabouts you live, but the going rate for that part in the UK is around £15 GBP from Triumph parts suppliers.

Whether the hose turns out to be blocked or not, if it's the 32 year-old original, it's already well overdue for replacement.

I agree L.A.B, this was the problem on mine back in the eighties. Took me awhile to figure it out. There must be some free play.
