Ariel full width hubs
« on: May 05, 2012, 10:45:13 AM »
I am working on the brakes of a 1957 B31 with Ariel full width hubs.
I read recently that not all Ariel full width hubs are the same ie the hubs on a Norton might be different to say this BSA etc; even though they appear similar.
Looking at the BSA parts book a "Brake lever and camshaft spindle assy" is listed. Interestingly on this bike the lever and cam assy are two seperate parts. ::)
The B31 is of unknown history; so it might be, if the above is true that the hubs were once fitted to a different marque.
The brakes work fine, just curious thats all. ;D
Anyone shed any light.

Hi there . Not quite sure where you are coming from here I was never aware that Ariel hubs were ever fitted to a Norton they were 2 different  companies whereas BSA and Ariel were at that time were one company although ran seperately at different factories. I believe at the time when BSA decided to use the Ariel hubs on their big singles and twins for 1956-57 it was just to use up surplus stock. When you say in your parts book the  "Brake lever and camshaft spindle assy" they are 2 seperate components. In my parts book which is for my 1957 Gold Flash the parts are listed seperately Brake cam complete part No. 42-5573 and Brake lever part No. 42-5576.

Hi

Nice one Bob it's sorted.

You prompted me to check my A group parts list.

I have a picture of a 400 Electra with Ariel hubs and assumed probably wrongly that the part was standard.

The front hubs and brake plates for swinging arm A & B groups are the same part number. But the B31 was fitted as I have described. However swinging arm A7/A10's are as you say and it is this A group set up on my bike. You refer to plate 17 ref numbers 16 and 24. On the B group parts list it's plate 19 ref number 22 part no 42 5626.

Cheers
